EVAP System troubleshooting
#1
Ok I now know more than I ever wanted to about the EVAP system in trying to find out what would be causing my P0442 code. I basically have 5 places to look. I'm going under the assumption this is related to the driveshaft explosion. This is the order that I'll look at these in trying to track down the problem
1) Evap lines - I checked these and fixed the one purge tube that had a hole in it.
2) Vent solenoid - less likely as it's above the gas tank and nothing could have struck it directly. not sure if the DS hitting the gas tank shield would jog that enough to cause a problem.
3) Gas cap - again, I think this one is unlikely, but you never know
4) Filler neck seal - some have mentioned this was a problem on their vehicles
5) EVAP canister - possible as the driveshaft probably smacked this. no way to check though
6) purge solenoid - Fairly unlikely as the solenoid is up at the intake
Here's my question though. The evap canister has three hoses connected to it. Two small ones, the purge and the tank line. The third is a bigger one that goes into a small box above the tank. I'm assuming this is the vent solenoid? not quite sure how to get it off that bracket, but just wanted to make sure I was on the right path. Might have to end up taking it to the dealer for a smoke test or at least for the Tech2 to see if I can get a better diagnosis.

yeah that lil box above the tank is the vent sol. the vent sol comes with the bracket when bought new and when i change them i keep the hose on the sol. and remove the other end from the canister, take the bolt off the sol bracket, unplug it, and pop the retainers holdin the hose to the crossmember off and drag it out towards the pass side.
you might be better off goin to the dealer and havin the smoke test done, that evap sys can detect a leak as small as a pin *****.

Mine threw a code for the evap right after I bought it. I was told it was due to overfilling the gas tank after the pump kicked off. I just went to the junk yard and got the vent solenoid and the evap canister for $75 dealer wanted $300 to fix it all took about 30 min to swap it out. Good luck with finding out what to replace never know what the DS hit when it gave out.
