cold start issues
#1
Lately, when my truck sits for a while (especially overnight and now colder tempatures) my truck struggle to turn over. It takes about 3-4 seconds before it starts. Once my truck warms up and I start it again, it fires up normal. It is really noticable after it my truck sits all day or over night.
Anyone know what the problem could be?
Thanks.

You are right about the **** and tires. I think if it has tires, it's cheaper.

Does it crank slowly or normal? If it cranks slowly, it may be time for a battery. If it cranks OK, try cleaning the throttle body as a starting point and try to clean the IAC valve. If that doesn't do it, start at the basics...spark, fuel pressure, etc.

Will try what you recommend.
By the way, where is the fuel filter located on these 04'.

Jim,
there is no fuel filter. the 04+ trucks deleted them... on older trucks it was located under the driver on the inside of the frame rail, right behind the ABS unit.
you also don't have an IAC (Idle Air Control), the 03+ trucks have the electronic throttle body, which cracks open rather than have a IAC, but you could clean the throttle body for good measure, make sure to clean both sides of the throttle blade.
For the record on my 03 I recently had a slow start issue, changing the battery with a Optima Red Top cured it. if the symptoms are identical before and after the battery then I would doubt it's the problem, but it there was any change then it won't hurt to test the new battery, they aren't always good even brand new, hell - I think I managed to find the only defective Red Top in existence

If your engine cranks normally but doesn't fire, just has extended crank before it starts, it is probably going to be your fuel pump bleeding back into the tank. But first pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator, on the left side of the fuel rail, and see if you have raw fuel at the vacuum line. If not it is probably going to be a fuel pump. The easiest way to check for the fuel pump is to install a pressure guage and turn the key on a few time til it reaches normal pressure (50-55psi) then let it sit if it starts dropping you can try to clamp the fuel hoses before they connect to the fuel rail and see if the pressure guage holds pressure. Hope this helps.
