Default black box on the side of trans?

Not sure what its called.. park safty switch?? Anyways i had to put a new 4l80e in my truck, the first time i just used the box off the factory trans and it worked great, when i pulled it i noticed it was cracked so I just left it on there when I traded it as a core, trucks a 99 and this new trans is a 03 and the box is a different style of box but the plugins are the same so I went with it. Today I fired it up and all worked well other then im only getting n,d,1 on the dash that light up. p,r,2,3 dont light up when its in that position. It starts so park saftey works, didnt check the R lights but as far as I can tell everything else is fine. My ? is is there any reason the new style box could be causing this? It worked fine before pulling the other trans. Played with the plugins and box for an hour and cant get it to work, any ideas before I buy a 50 dollar box?

Have u adjusted it up and down until it showed all gears on cluster. Had to do that a couple times on mine. It will throw it out of wack.
