No experience? Scary...
Well more then anything with the above impression of "you don't know jack"
... I'd get the one that has the most user support through forums, the one with the most help screens, a good and easily understood manual, and pretty screens that are graphical in nature, rather then text based.
Sounds like Edit is out, and that leaves HP Tuners and EFI Live

Both HP Tuners and EFI live offer great tuning/scanning packages Just like unredeemed said I would check both there web sites out and get the one you feel most confortable with. I personally use HP Tuners and I like it but its probally best to get the one you like best. There are also several forum vendors that offer tuning at a decent price if you feel its to much over your head. Please lets not let this thread turn into a my software is better than your software thread it happens way to much. Also Forum members are always willing to lend a hand if you purchase tuning software and run into a problem.

Just ordered EFILive Commercial after spending a couple of days going back and forth between the HPT and EFILive websites and searching for all relevant posts here and elsewhere. Will start with the diagnostic/datalogging features of the software and work up to using its tuning capabilities after a lot more reading.
Do some reading to get an idea of what can be done with this type of software. If you don't yet fully understand the concepts and terminology, do some more reading and check out the tuning forums and user manuals prior to attempting any tuning. These full-featured programmers aren't as simple as the handheld types but have much greater capabilities in the hands of a knowledgeable user.
