Default 98 vortec 7.4 acquired, now for questions

I've been toying with the idea of swapping my 5.0 for a 7.4 in a 96 K1500,

I was going back and forth on the 8.1 or the 7.4 but have now settled on the 7.4.

I'm running a 0411 computer and have been looking for a factory combo that used the 0411 with the 7.4 but have not came across one yet. I have read on the different forms that it has been done but just have not located the correct truck to pull the tune from.

The next issue will be the wiring harness, I picked up the harness and computer from the donor truck but it is from a 98 with the extra plug on the passenger firewall of which the 96 does not have. I can use the injector harness from the 98 harness but that is about it. I may just mod my harness since its already repined for the 0411, suggestions anyone?

I'll start tearing down the motor and checking things out soon as I get some time. I plan to install the ZZ502 cam and replace the injectors once tore down.

Anyone familiar with this swap that can offer any items that I need to address before I get deep into the install?

Neal

There was mever an 0411/L29 stock combo.

There was the rpo L21 454 that came stock with the 24x reluctor, CNP ignition and ETC.

The vehciles are medium duty 1998-2000 trucks, P30 vans etc. Look for the L21 rpo and the short LS1/8.1 ignition wires.
It uses the 09354896 PCM stock. The 24 ckp reluctor is about $20 from GM, then use the 454 distributer as the 1 x cam sensor only, and get a calibration from an L21 truck and have a CNP/ETC L29. The L29 and L21 use the same cam, heads except the L21 is ready for CNG/LNG usage so it has the better valves, valve seats etc. The L21 to buy as a complete engine is about double the price of the L29 longblock.

Thanks for the info,

I found someone that can program the 0411 for the 7.4. I'll get it installed and running before I start on the CNP conversion.

Spoke with Straub Technologies about a custom cam for my BB, he suggested a roller cam custom ground for torque that will take advantage of the factory heads. It'll work with the factory PCM tune and valve train if that's the way I want to go. He suggested somewhere in the 350 HP and 520 tq. range.

I pulled the valve covers off to see what the inside looked like, it was spotless so I feel good about that.

I'm doing this same swap into my 2000 Tahoe Limited that originally had the 5.7. I too had already done the 0411 swap.

I have the ZZ502 cam and complete comp cams valvetrain upgrades as well. 1 3/4 long tube headers and an Edelbrock Pro FLo XT oval port intake with 90mm TB. My plan is to keep the stock 5.7 harness and mod it where needed as its not that much different, plus my engine is a 96 so i couldn't use the engine harness i got anyways.

I'm hoping for around 400HP and 500+TQ with a 4L80e and 2500 stall converter.

I talked to Blackbear Performance about tuning the 0411 for the L29 and he said it would be no problem.

Yes 80e. The truck mine came out of was a P30 type box truck. I have the complete engine wiring harness and PCM it came with.

I think using the harness in the truck may be the best option for me to, I've been looking for a harness from a 96 or 97 K2500 or K3500 but haven't found one.

I'm also looking at a coil near plug swap for the 454.

Im pretty sure the 96 harness i have would work in your truck if your interested. there was no way to make it work in my 2000.

I also looked at the CNP conversion and to me atleast for a fairly stockish engine it wasn't0 worth the expense. I just bought a new billet aluminum distributor and gonna run it that way for the time being.
