to go to a junk yard and spend most of the day pulling a motor out of a truck, with no intake manifold (I have a spare at home), no valve covers or coils etc, with unknown miles?

And btw its a 01+ LQ4 6.0 and I can get it for $86 if I pull it myself

If you have time, go for it. Even if it needs machine work or other parts it's a good starting point for $86.

Thats what I was thinking. Me and low dime saw it while we were out at the yards yesterday getting his 5.3

It had a hood on it, so I don't think water would have gotten down into it. It was missing the valve covers, but they were 317 heads and it was a 2500HD. It didn't have a tranny in it, so pulling the motor would be just undoing the motor mounts and yanking it out. I'd have to buy an engine stand and borrow a hoist and all that fun stuff

It would be worth it for the block alone IMO.

I may be picking up a 6.0 core myself here in the near future

I just need to contact the junk yard and ask them exactly what they mean by pulling it "myself". I know I would need to do all the labor and supply my own tools, but I wonder if they would be willing to help as far as lifting it out of the truck with their fork lift and setting it in the bed of my truck.

how are you gonna get the engine out of your truck?

I had that problem lol. I drove around with an engine in the bed of my truck for a week with a tarp over it haha

im sure they would lift it with the fork truck and set it in the bed of your truck for ya, they most likely want you to get it ready to pull, so they dont have to unbolt anything, motor mounts, wire harness'es, etc.

2-3 guys could just lift it out and set it in a garage or whatever...i've done that several times, yes it does suck lifting a complete engine but ya gotta do what ya gotta do

I'd be using an engine hoist. **** lifting a motor out of a bed, or into the bed of the truck. Never doing that again without a hoist.
