Why I do my own maintenance
#11
I do everything i can myself.. if i cant. i talk to my friends and find a close personal friend that they know. Im sure i can fix anything except a blown trans.. but i know someone that can..
And seriously! who cant change their own oil?!!
cant take one bolt out, and put it back in.. the manual says 6quarts.. who cant put 6 quarts of oil in a motor??
Kindof scary that these people exist.

I have a friend my brother went to school with that owns a VERY successful garage and wrecker service. I take all my stuff to him and he gives me great deals. He put the slave cylinder in my truck, and i told him to go out and test drive it and give it all the hell he wanted. He did, it tore up, he jerked the tranny back out, got another slave cylinder and popped it back in, free of charge. He takes a lil' longer sometimes, but it's well worth it to me in the end, if i don't like it, i take it back and it's the first on his list.

I wish they would do more investigations like this. I have been a Tech for 12 years and counting. I have never sold a service that was not needed. Im a rare breed these days.
Sadly its not just jiffy lube its your local dealer, tire/service shop, gas station, performance shop etc.. Millions are made each year on fraudulent services.
Have you ever noticed the turn over in managment at some of these larger chains, Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys, Sears, NTB, Tirekingdom etc.. Most likley you will see a new face everytime you go in. Reason being is the pressure from the corporations to hit a certain goal that is not even possable. I have seen some of the most honest people turn into scum from the pressure. Some do have some morals and refuse to submit, But they are just forced out or quit.
I have a nice little collection of insider information. I could go into great deatail, But I would only bury myself and not put a scratch in the armor of these big Corporations.
Sorry for the rant but this crap really gets me worked up. You can make a quick buck and screw someone over, But 99% of the time they will never come back. There is enough honest work out there to build a good rep and make a decent living as a tech. I am usualy booked up for the week while the other guys are shaking down cars and selling them crap they dont need.

I'm just now willing to crawl under there.
My gas station guy lets me wander everywhere so I'm under the truck and under the hood with him/them and they all know what they are doing.
$22 max for a oil change and 20 min max so I'm happy to not have to jack it up and crawl under it.
And they all go bananas over the truck and I get lots of compliments etc so I walk away feelin like a pretty cool dude.
(had a car fall on me when I was 16 so I'm pretty paranoid about crawlin under there
)

Had a car roll back on me one time. Tire against my chest and severe burns on the headers as I was trying to get out. I still have the scars from that. Extra careful now. I feel you there.
