ouch, glad she's ok!
as far as years to look for being a ford you'll want stay CLOSE to the same year. the explorers went to the new chassis in 1995 while the rangers didn't get the change until 1998. the 3.0 and 4.0 are not interchangeable and are completely different engine families so don't plan on a swap unless you want a project. keep in mind the new body style ranger has different motor mounts that your '95 block doesn't have provisions for so '97 is the newest ranger your engine will physically fit but they kept the holes for the older chassis. this link has some good information on the 4.0 V6 and some of their differences year to year Rebuilding The Ford 4.0L Pushrod V6, Doug Anderson, Automotive Rebuilder, April 2001. as far as electronic differences i don't have anything useful to tell you...

The tree had a few cuts & abrasions, but looks like it's making a speedy recovery as well.
So far, in my own crappy research, I've found out that the only really big difference between the OHV 4.0's is whether they have a 6 or 8 bolt crank. And that's not a big deal, because they're balanced the same, and you just need to swap the flywheel/flexplate to the one you need.
I also found this forum The Ranger Station Forums - Powered by vBulletin where the members seem to know a thing or two. Seems to be plenty of writeups for 2.9 to 4.0, 3.0 to 4.0, and I think I found a 4.0 SOHC to 4.0 OHV as well.
Found a couple of Explorers for candidates already in the $500-700 range. But she'd rather have a truck, so we're gonna hold out for a little while to see if something pops up.
