trans question. only works in reverse

trans question. only works in reverse
my girlfriend was driving her ford ranger and pulling out onto a main rd when the trans just started revving. she was able to coast into a gas station. i towed the truck home and backed it into the drive way. it will go into reverse and move but when you put it in D,2,1 it just revs. anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?
i know this is a ford ranger trans but i figured i would see if anyone has any idea what it could be.
