Contract work is crazy unstable, atleast in my experience. Id probably stay at the current job if you have a chance to move up. If youre going to be stuck on nights/weekends Id take the other job if you research into it and everything seems to be on the up and up.

I wouldn't believe much from the horse's mouth in this situation. New trucks and equipment don't mean much. It could mean he is doing well or it could mean he is doing poorly and this is his last attempt to make it work. As others have said, you can't put a price on a stable job and piece of mind. If you don't mind doing what you currently do, I'd stick with it. There are times and places to be greedy and this current economy isn't one of them.

The problem being if I leave the current job, I cannot come back to my same position. I'm currently the Assistant Manager, so #3 (**** catcher, lol) at the store. If I left and came back I would have to start back at the bottom as a cashier/sacker making barely 8.00 an hour. Good terms or not..

The new job is contract work but I'm not going to try to sell people. The company has enough clients to keep me busy as a full time employee. supposedly. The owners mother is the one that is getting me on the job. She says he's doing very well and could use another good guy. he has told me whenever I'm ready to leave current job to come on over. There's a couple of routes already running, he's wanting me to start another off of the extra jobs at hand.

I just really am tired of working nights and weekends and every holiday. Every one I work with says I always look stressed. I'm actually scared I might have a heart attack or stroke in the future, I'm just looking for a less stressful atmosphere,With more time to spend with my family.

if your not happy where you are, take the new job. before i left i would try to make 2-3 extra car payments and house payments, or atleast have the money in the bank to do so. if this new job doesnt pan out and you go jobless you will have some time to get back on your feet.

lets see if can help you on your thoughts.
i had a real good job rebuilding electric motors and pumps.
not the little ones, the real big ones used in chemical plants.
it is allot cheaper to pay to have one rewired, new bearrings installed and seals then to buy a new motor, most of these motors are so old they cannot be replaced, or the company is not around any more.
owning my own business, doing very well at the time, i quit my job.
now with me working my own business, i let a couple of employies go that ment more money in our pockets.
along came IKE, he took a chunk out of my ***.
gas shot sky high, leaving people no extra money to spend in my business.
the economy tanked, their went another chunk out of my ***.
got rid of all employies.
let bills go and kept the main ones.
got down to the point of asking my dad for help on paying my morgauge.
now i work at EXXON for couple of dollars less then what i was making.
sometimes it is better off to stay where your at because you have no idea of what will happen 3, 6, or 9 months down the road.
before someone gets you thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, you better take a good look at the lawn your mowing.

You've been with a company for 7 years so you must like it. Ask for a promotion or to be transferred to a different store. A large chain can offer more for advancement then a small independent. Carpet cleaning is a job not a career. Employees have a max wage that they can earn. You won't make $25-30 /hr cleaning carpets but it should be attainable with your current company. If you can't advance any farther where you are go to a different chain. Always choose a career over a job.

This is the best advice yet.^^^

I would suggest staying where you are at and where you are safe. I would also suggest asking your Manager for more responsibility so you can prepare yourself for a future Management position. There is allot to be said for a long term job with a company, they recognize your commitment.....all you need to do is show some interest in advancing.

Speaking from my position, I like to see my team taking steps to advance in the company. Someone that sits around and goes through the motions is not who I want working for me.

I am sure you know how much a Grocery Store Manager makes with bonuses That will far surpass what you will make working for a carpet cleaner.

I would not do it man....just ask for Promotion and move up to higher management position and get big bonuses if possible.

Tell the carpet cleaning you would do it as side job or part-time job....and test waters. Keep your job man honestly.

The grocery chain I work for only has five stores. It is a local city chain. It is very hard to move up in rank. It usually takes someone getting fired or someone retiring to move up. As far as responsibility, I have lots of that. I really feel in some areas my store manager is holding me back for that reason because he knows his store is in good hands when he leaves for the day. The way I see it if i stay put, I have at least 10 yrs at my store before I move up unless some gets fired or quits. The owner has mentioned moving me but it got swept under the rug when our store started making more money.

I have thoroughly read all the advice you guys have given me so far and its really helped me put it into perspective. I'm just gonna stay put for the job security reason. My hours suck but I've delt with it this long, I will just continue to deal with it. Thanks for all who shared their input.
