HOLLY SPRINGS, Ga. (June 18) - The surging price of gasoline has come to this: a "fuel surcharge" on your next speeding ticket.
Drivers caught speeding in this north Atlanta suburb soon will have to pay an extra $12 - to cover $4-a-gallon gas costs for the police officers who stop them.

The City Council passed the fee hike, effective July 1, to offset fuel prices that have eaten up nearly 60% of the police department's 2008 fuel budget, Police Chief Ken Ball says.

He expects the fee increase, which applies to all moving violations and can be rescinded if gas prices fall below $3 a gallon, to generate $19,500 to $26,000 a year for the town of 7,700.

now when the lights go on, you stop right where your at.
if thier is no chase, you cannot charge me for the fuel you did not burn.

Sorry to hear that. They will need to increase tax one way or another to cover the fuel costs. This way the speeders will cover most of the cost, assuming you don't get a ticket yourself.

keep your *** out of trouble and somebody else foots the added expenses, not a bad idea, really. I'd rather the tax fit the crime then have to pay (as a citizen) for the indiscretions of others.

Like you said, if you get the blues, pull the fug over!

Just another way for the police to generate revenue for the government.

I thought police were put here to serve and protect?? not screw and f$%#*! us to death!!! LAME
Totally irony that we pay people to screw us over every day. Go out and fight some real crime for a change instead of justifying your overtime with traffic ticket!!!! And no I dont know how your supposed to do that, its your job you've been trained to do it so figure it out like evryone else does at their job!
End rant................

let's just hope that the idea doesn't spread over here and gets passed through our own city council.

A lot of other services have an additional fuel surcharge so I don't really see a big deal with this one. Plus, you have the option of not paying this one. Don't speed.

Ya, no big deal, just don't get caught. If you're so unaware of your surroundings that you miss a cop, you shouldn't be driving fast. Just stay alert.
