my gun is stolen, WTF?

I bought a Sig Sauer P220 .45 last year from a local gun store thats been around for 30+ years. I traded in my Springfield 1911 (paid $450) plus $200 cash, so $650 total for the Sig, good deal.
my parents told me this morning that a sergeant from LA county called their house looking for me. I thought it was a reference call for my buddy going into the academy so i called back right away. he asks me if i bought this specific gun last year and i say yeah. he says its been reported stolen since 2004 and the case has been bothering him for a while. i told him when i get home ill call him back with the serial numbers.
i called him back and all 3 s/n are the same, and he says yep, thats the one. he told me if i get my receipt he can do whatever he can to get me compensated for what i paid from the gun shop, and also the owner is sol he has to buy it back. its my only pistol and i just bought a house in a not so awesome neighborhood. if i had a back up i would just give it back to the owner, you shouldnt have to buy your own **** back.
anyway, the cop was damned cool but it just sucks i have to give up the gun, they are around $1100 now and i got it for almost half that.
the cop was pissed that it made it through paperwork and ended up for sale at a FFL

The statute of limitations applies to the prosecuting the offender. The gun is still stolen.
Get the gun back to its owner and make the gun store owner make things right. They should take care of you but if the don't threaten legal action and I bet they do. The gun store should take the hit on this, not the original owner.
I carry a Sig P220 on duty and love it, It's a damn fine weapon. Having said that the Springfield XD is also one hell of a handgun and may be worth considering if you want to save a few bucks.

Gun shops that are not pawn shops are not required to run the numbers through the system. Pawn Shops run every number of every gun through the local Police or Sheriffs office. The gun shop you got it from should make it right with you. I'd buy a glock. I would then ask the PD to run the numbers to assure you it isn't stolen.

Sucks man, I've heard of this happening before....the owner who reported it stolen does not have to pay a thing for it's recovery...you are out $ but I'd think if the gun store has a good reputation and some honor they should at least offer you some compensation.

Wow that sucks, has me thinking how it went through a gun shop, if it was a stolen gun.. Hope things are made right for ya. On a side note, you can buy remaned sigs for 600 bucks, that look, shoot as good as a new one.. My buddy picked one up, it looks brand spanken new... Good luck

either way im not interested in making the poor guy buy something hes already paid for
i was told the case would be turned over to a detective and wait for the call. it sounded like the cop was very interested in investigating the shop that sold me the gun so i dont htink its gonna be an issue.
