How to tell when you're being blown off...

I sent a couple emails to Illinois Dyno in Port Byron asking for a ball park estimate of how many $$$$ it would take to get a short block and a Procharger to make my goal of 1000 hp.
This is the answer I got back....
"To build 1000 HP you will need $30,000 plus, this is a lot of money and before we begin a project this large the original quoted amount must be paid in full before any work begins. This allows us to purchase all the needed parts. There will be additional costs that arise during a build this size also."
If their goal was to get rid of me they got'r done.

There are different opinions of what it takes to make 1000hp. Some people say you need a big turbo or a lot of juice. Other people say that you need an aftermarket block, 3k crank, 2500 rods etc. It depends on who you talk to, and I can't blame the shop for their response. I bet they get emails every day from people that aren't serious. I am sure I could make 1000 HP fairly cheap (for what you are getting) but it wouldn't last. If I was building a 1000 HP engine for someone I would not go cheap on parts, and they would have a high estimate. I would do this so if something broke they wouldn't accuse me of building junk engines. If you know what you want as an end result I would suggest asking for a quote with specific parts that you feel are comfortable in your engine.

You, and all the rest of us all know that $30k is outrageous and doubly insulting to ask for it ALL up-front.

When I want to get a quote I usually go in person, like mentioned above they likely get bombarded with emails. So if you take the time to drive down and talk to them you usually don't get the **** off price.
