I really don't get this. If I have the volume up loud playing music or a youtube video, it gets ridiculously slow. It is definitely volume related, because I can lower the volume on the same video or song and will have no problems. And when it gets to a loud part in a song or video (example: street race video when they floor it and the engines get loud) it will slow down my computer to a crawl until the loudness stops.
I can have the volume all the way up on the computer, watch a quiet part of a video and all is well, but as soon as a loud part comes on, it wants to freeze and die.
Laptop specs (it's no slouch)

I'm pretty damn computer savvy, but this one is stumping the **** out of me and is very annoying.

Yep. Hell, even if the volume is maxed on the computer, and the audio being played is quiet, there are no problems. But if the audio gets to the point of actually being loud, all other processes go to the MAX. My firefox stops working, everything. I can't minimize windows, the computer practically locks up minus the mouse pointer.

Well the audio rarely stops. Usually the audio while continue while everything else (including the video) stops. There are some cases where it is so bad that the audio stops as well, but it's not near as common. And I believe my audio driver is up to date.

check for updated drivers for you video card and audio card. if there are no newer versions, maybe try older drivers to see if they work better. you can also try turning down the quality of the video settings on your computer.

It could be a codec problem. Does this happen when your watching videos on your computer? I would try uninstalling adobe Flash and reinstall it from adobe.com
If that does not fix it then I would look into re-installing direct x on your computer.
There may be some type of hardware acceleration property setting that you can adjust.
also as Dm stated, it could be driver related
