I love freaking performance boats 
That is def a healthy set up, that number 6 merc drive is about 50k on its own.. Here are some pics I have of some pretty bad *** boats.. 1350 hp is nice, but 2800 HP is even better 
And some other turbo'd boats.. These are huge for the catalina ski race, the people that are pulled behind them for hours on end have huge swingers..
Also a Merc 1200 quad rotor deal
Love the old gale banks set ups

Basically through a bell housing.. The main shaft from the out drive( splined) slides into a coupler that is bolted on the back of the flex plate.. Essentially the same way a car or truck app is.. The shaft is kept centered using a gimble bearing that is mounted in the very inner out drive transom assembly..Hell alot of drag boats, offshore performance boats run 2-3speed trans, so they can turn a huge pitch prop in high gear, utilize the lower gears to spin it out of the hole.. I will try to find a vid of my buddies boat with a 2 speed glide in it
