Default ? about grades of stainless

How does T409, 304 compare to 304L as far as corrosion resistance goes? I can't find any direct comparisons on the internet. What is the difference between 304 and 304L?

The diff is the amount of carbon that is in the two. The L stands for Low. meaning a lower carbon amount, which would make it more resistant, but at more cost. Also 409 series of stainless has some kinda titanium added to it.. 304 will work for what ever you need it 4

How does the T409 compare to the 304L? My exhaust is made out of 304L and I want to put a cutout in it but I don't want the cutout discolor different then the rest of the exhaust. If need be ill build my own cutout out of 304L it will cost me about 200 bucks to make it though

I would almost bet the the 409 is more $$ then the 304L, just do to it having titanium in it.. I say the 304 would discolor just about the same, again just a lil less carbon in the 304L.. And I thought I was particular

400 series is a higher carbon and heat treatable alloy, it is more prone to corrosion. The 300 series corrosion resistant steels are better suited for your application. 316 is what is used in a coastal or marine enviroments.
John, you seem to understand materials, what do you do?

ok I re-read the thread and this is for a cutout? They might mfg from 400 series to prevent warpage.

I don't know about John but Cody is a damn good fluffer I hear.

He really knows how to maintain material hardness.

A good friend of my father and myself owns a hydraulic shop. My dad is in charge of the shop, before that my dad did custom cars, performance boats, for 35+ years, so metal was always used for something, so I got a good understanding from dad. I do alot of the fabbing and metal working at the shop, fabbing up new cyclinders, or repairing broking ones, so it kinda helps me in understanding what is what, so does working with it all the time, reading is where I get it..
