14 bolt SF
Swapping a 14 bolt 9.5 in the silverado. Hummer H2 housing, E locker, 4.56, dutchman 6 lug axles. The housing is wider then the 10 bolt. I think it might be the widest SF 14 GM used. Pics of truck, 10 bolt still under it. Just finished up the diff yesterday.

How about something like this instead of hacking off those janky factory brackets?

https://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/R1653.html https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...3876a10a2a.jpg Edit: well put them on order. I can probably make those work. Be less effort then making my own or cutting off old ones. |
I figured this had to be easier then trying to cut the old ones off. ;)

Nice!!!
What are the rear brakes from? |

What are the rear brakes from? All the parts are from 3/4 trucks that used the semi float rear axle. I'm not sure if the free float axle used the same brake stuff. I would think it doesn't. Edit* silverado backing plates don't fit the h2 anchor without some enlarging of the center bore. See pics below. |

The rotors are from a 04 express 2500 6 lug. The calipers are from an 05 silverado 2500. The hummer h2 uses the same caliper as the silverado 2500. Also parking brake stuff was from a silverado 2500 but it is the same on the van and hummer h2. The brake anchors are from the hummer and I'm using silverado backing plates, just to plug off the hole for the abs sensor that the H2 uses. My truck doesn't have active braking or stibilatrak or whatever all the fancy stuff is called. So no sensors for me to worry about.

Ok, So your using the OEM stuff but all new. The brackets are all wrapped up so I couldn't tell what you were using.

Yeah I wanted to stay OEM with the brakes if I could. Dutchman did a great job. They have the wrong length listed on their chart for the hummer h2 axle though. Almost 3" short.
I know the 88-98 6 lug 14 bolt axles lengths are listed wrong every where as well. I used Dutchman in the past for the AXN 14 bolt hybrid rear end. No one else wanted to do it. Initially, they were a little hesitant after I sent them measurements. So I sent them a used OEM axle for them to measure and explained the application to them so they could catalog it. There is no Information listed any where for those shafts. They have since been discontinued through GM and Used one's are nearly impossible to find. |

That AXN axle is what I would have used, but when I was looking a few yrs ago, I thought they were expensive. Cheapest I could find was $1000. And I would have had to re gear it and maybe change out the locker. What's funny is, I have a little more into this hummer 14 bolt now. And it's definitely more work to go the route I did. The AXN would have bolted right in. I did gain bigger outer bearings, bigger brakes, a E locker, and 1.375" of width. Not that any of that is a huge deal. The AXN would have been plenty strong for me. And I didn't need bigger brakes. My 1/2 ton drum brakes worked fine. Never had an issue stopping when towing my little toy hauler. |
Making some progress. I think it has a decent width. Of course I wouldn't mind it wider. But still looks pretty good. The bedsides are pulled almost 2" per side. Front fenders are 2" flare also. So it doesn't look as wide as it is. Still have to set pinion angle and tack everything up.https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...637b9d357d.jpg

Was looking over the driveshaft. My truck came factory with 1350 U joints. Took dimensions to verify. They always looked like they would fit the yoke of the 14 bolt. Im not very familiar with different U joint sizes. Can't spot them visually. Also I've seen threads on cutting of 5/8" of driveshaft length doing a 14 bolt swap. My truck needs way more then that. Don't have any final measurements but, it's more then .750".

On a regular cab truck I played with it was like 7/8 that it had to be shortened. It's always best to measure. Who's to say the guy cutting the tubes didn't cut a hair longer or shorter from 1 day to the next. Or that one didn't shrink more than another based on how it was prepped and welded. |

The factory 2 Piece drive shaft is 5/8 of an inch shorter than its 10bolt counter part. On a single shaft application you need to remove more.

Also if you want to be extra beefy you can buy a 1410 yoke for the pinion.

Cool thread. I've got a 99 NBS ECSB. I bought a 9.5" 2KXX axle and regeared it from 3.42 to 4.10. This thread is motivating me to try to swap it. I hope I can do it with a bit of cutting and welding.
My truck did get swapped to a 4L80e, but I don't remember what the yoke that I used. It came from Denny's driveshaft. The driveshaft itself was not shortened, as the center bearing carrier crossmember has slots that allow the adjustment. |

That axle is out of the 2014+ trucks right? 12 bolt cover? What is the width?
I believe when I measured the WMS it was like 1/2 or 1" wider compared to the WMS of the GMT 800. I actually compared it a 14 bolt 10.5" disc that came from a gmt800 2500HD I had laying around. I assumed it's the same as the 10 bolt? I have the 12 bolt in my garage, but haven't put back the axles. I have the 16" factory rims on my truck and I confirmed they won't clear on the 12 bolt, so I'll need something larger. |

Yes. 12 bolt cover. I think they are calling it the "12 bolt?" Obviously, not the same 12 bolt from the 70s. It seems to be like the AXN, but I don't know enough about any of them honestly.

All tabs welded up. Painting in progress. Got the idea for standing it up from another thread. Its soon to be under the truck permanently....... I hope. |
I tried using the silverado 2500 backing plate, because I dont have any rear wheel speed sensors on this truck. The silverado backing plates don't have that provision. I could have carved out the center. figured it was easier to just block off the abs sensor hole instead.

First impressions of the work.... Brake pedal travel sucks. I hope Hydroboost helps. The only solution i know. I swapped in the bigger 1.25" master and its not enough. I think thats the biggest master that is vacum boosted and bolts in? The gearing change is awesome!! Truck came alive. 3.73s and 35s suck!!! Also need a longer passenger side e brake cable. I changed compression valving and went to a heavier spring in the front. The truck ran out of travel early before. So need some tweaks before dialed. |
