Remote Starters
#1
My remote starter **** the bed about a month ago and im looking at getting a new system. has anyone had an aftermarket (non GM) system installed lately? i was just wondering what you guys had and how you liked them. i know some of the high end ones can start the vehicle from like a mile away, and i would like that. Also, has anyone had one installed at anyplace Like Best Buy or Circuit City? all of the local electronics shops around me keep going out of business but i dont relly trust these department stores.
Any input would be great.

I have an Autopage, self installed and I can start my truck from a fair distance.
I work on the 6th floor and I can start my truck in the parking lot across the street. I have been real happy with it considering it cost me less than $100 to put in.

I had a Astrostart remote starter installed in Nov. '07 and love it. It is the twoway w/ feedback. Don't know what the range is, but I am way happier w/ this one then the last 3 I have had. http://www.astroflex.com/index.php?module=CMS&id=15

do it yourself. 1 (generally speaking) you will do a better job than someone else, even if you pay them. if you pay cheap, you will get crapped on. 2, you will have hid the components in such a way only you will know where they are. not just the 1st place an installer would normally put it, which is often the 1st place thieves go. and 3, take pride and be like i did that.
alarms arnt that hard to install. ive done a few in my days, and last one was a pristige 890 or something link that.. alarm with 2way remote and remote start.. just dont freak out about the wire harness. do one wire at a time and roll with it.. if you just look at harness alone, your probally gona freak.

i also have an autopage... and i LOVE IT. I previously had a bestbuy installed top of the line viper, and well it was nice, but not worth what i paid for it and the range was not as good as the autopage. I would have a stereo shop do it if you arent to comfortable w/ doing it yourself.

Anything made by DEI is good...Clifford is one for instance. BestBuy carries (at least used to carry) DEI products. I installed a DEI remote start/alarm in my wife's Toyota Matrix about a year ago, and so far it's been solid. Co-incodentally (sp?), the alarm is also called Matrix. The remote works pretty far away (not sure exactly how far, couple hundred yards I guess?), but we can start her car and unlock the doors from inside our apartment when she's parked at the end of the block. I know that she also starts her car from inside her office, on the 2nd floor to the parking lot.
As far as getting it installed at BestBuy or one of those places, it's hit or miss. I had a friend who worked at BestBuy who was an excellent installer, but every one else who worked there was useless. So if someone came in on a day that he wasn't working, they usually ended up making a few trips back to get things straightened out.
