I have an 03 Z71 that i bought about 6 weeks ago. It has the base CD player with RDS, 6 speaker, etc. No onstar, and no Bose. Anyway the driver side sub in the door works only sometimes, but the tweeter in the door works all the time. It seems that once the inside of the cab gets hot, it will work perfect. It doesn't come and go or get any static, it just either works or it doesn't at start up.

Also there are no "chimes" coming from the speaker when it chooses not to work.

Has anyone had this issue? Does it seem to be the speaker or the headunit? I am guessing headunit as it doesn't appear to be just a short.

 

when you say sub you mean the speaker not the tweeter? i'm not too familiar with the bose system...but from the way it sounds...it could be a loose connection either at the speaker or to the head unit...i doubt it to be a short unless the individual amp is not turning on for some reason...that too could be a reason...with the bose system you have an individual amp to each speaker & if the amp is not getting power...your speaker will not get power

 

When I say sub, I am referring to the 6.5" component speaker in the door.

My guess would be the speaker or the wiring to it, if it was in the head unit, wouldn't the tweeter go out also?

 

That part has me confused as well. I can gurantee that when the inside of the cab gets hot inside, the speaker will work perfect, and will continue to work as long as I do not turn it off.

This thought may be WAY out there, but what about the voice coil reacting enough to the heat to work?

Should i just test the hot wire on the speaker when it is not working?

 

1) grab you a 9volt battery
2)strip back some speaker wire behind the deck (wire that goes to the speaker in question)
3)touch battery to speaker wire when vehicle is off (so everything is cold)

Results:
1) If speaker makes a poping sound when the battery is touched to the wires the speaker is fine, it is that channel of the built in amp in the radio that is at fault. Replace with your desired choice of aftermarket radio.
2) If no sound comes from the speaker then the speaker is at fault. Replace with your desired choice of aftermarket speaker.

I will just pull the door panal off and test it. I will let you know what I find.

 

Honestly man i would pull the radio out and test it as close to the harness as possible so you can eliminate the wire between the radio and speaker as a problem as well. Plus, IMHO it is easier to pull the radio out on those trucks than the door panel, you dont even need any tools to pull the radio out. Just a thought. Good luck.
