If it's just a screen, I'd hook it up to a network(preferably yours), access the drive, and pull all your data off, just to be safe. That is, if you don't have to enter a password to logon to the laptop.....you'll be able to start it up without the display.

I've replaced motherboards on laptops, so if it's the screen, it's replaceable. CompUsa is a waste of your time & money...if you can turn a screw driver & be perceptive to where everything hooks up, you're golden.

You should be able to hook an external monitor to the laptop. This would tell you if it is the video card or the LCD Display that is bad. I've changed just about every part on Dell Notebooks arlready and it isn't very hard, just have to be careful not to break any of the plastic parts. If you need any help PM me.

thanks!
external monitor works fine with the laptop when hooked up. I removed the LCD screen and LCD screen inverter board yesterday. Found a shop in CA that sells them for $350. But I cant fine the LCD inverter board anywhere.

How do I know if its the the LCD screen, the LCD inverter board, or both?

update:

well it looks like the problem can be one of 3 things

1. The motherboard - least likely - and the last I will replace
2. LCD screen - more likely, however. I'm told when these go out they usually stay black instead of showing colors.
3. LCD screen inverter - most likely - based on the way it stopped working this is what I will replace first. Ordered it Wed, $100 shipped, hopefully that's the problem.

Thanks for your help
