Default Hard drive won't work.

Hey guys. OK, I'll admit first off that I'm a complete dolt in most fields, computers especially. So maybe I shouldn't bother trying this one: I've got a Pioneer Premier DEH690-UB deck in my '99 Sierra. I got it because I liked the USB jack in the back so I could run the cable to the glove box with no exposed wires. It run's The Girl's ipod like a charm, but I wasn't as jazzed on Maroon 5 as my better half. So I bought a 160GB La Cie external hard drive, thinking it'd be the ****. So I loaded some tunes on it (I think) but when I plug it in, the green light on the hard drive pulsates in time with the clicking noises it makes, and my deck displays Format Read for a couple minutes. Then the hard drive finally stops clicking, and the display reads No Audio. I'm thinking that a)I screwed up and didn't really copy any music to the hard drive, and b) the deck doesn't quite have the juice to power the hard drive. What do you guys think? Anyone out there have a hard drive in their glove box? Thanks.

how did you hook the hard drive up? i know it doesnt take the same plug as the ipod.....some of thos usb ports on the aftermarket radios will only read flash drives and then you can get an adapter to run the ipod, so it might not read your hard drive correctly if it wasnt ment for a hard drive to be plugged into it.......

It came with the USB cable, as well as an ipod cable that plugs into the USB cable. I disconnected the ipod cable and plugged in the cable for the hard drive. Could it be a prolem with formatting? I'm using Windows XP as my OS.

Check the owner's manual for what file types the deck will read...

make sure you format the music correctly.

if you want to see if there is music, just plug the HD into your PC and see if there's any files on it.

i know on the JVC radios with the USB cable they will only play a flash drive and nothing else so my guess is either it is in the wrong format like cam said or it is not intended to play anything else but a ipod and flash drive....

i think pioneers will read/run an external hd. I know with mine it did the similar thing and the hd. wasn't getting enough power. On some drives there is two usb cables, one for transfer, and one for power. you will need both, (if yours has two) and you should be able to run a ubs cable (connected to in ignition 12v) to the other ubs port and it work. thats just how mine worked. donno bout yours.

OK, so the ehd is at the hacker buddy's getting partitioned down into 20 gig chunks. It has the usb cable and and what they call a "USB power sharing cable," which I'm guessing needs to be the one I use do to voltage levels. I guess I'll fill y'all in in a week or so.
