What I'm running now in my SS is a sealed down firing probox with two 10's.

It sounds great for classic rock but now adays with low digital produced base and the Nu metal I listen to I really miss the 12's.
I have a 12 in my stepside and there is a clear differnace.


How much differnant does an upfiring underseat box sound?
Does the seat cushion affect the sound a lot?
I don't have the luxury of hearing anyones to know if i like it.

I may do something custom and incorporate a 12 or 2.

I have two rear seats out of a denali and may make custom brackets with matching seat covers and a rear console.

 

i wouldnt do an upfiring box becuase the seat will muffel the sound. the down firing box reflects the sound off the bottom of the cab floor and shoots it up towards your head if you can imagine it.

i'm about to put to ARC audio KAW 12d4's in my SSS very soon, they arrive tomorrow. As for upfire or downfire, i have had downfire in my past 3 boxes and it sounded fine but it shook everything under the cab and such. My buddy has 2 10's in an upfire box we custom made and it sounds awesome and from what i can tell it isnt getting muffled from the seat or anything so I am going upfire for my 12's. I will let you know how it turns out once it actually gets done, working 60hr weeks and on weekends is going to really hurt my time for this

 

There are a few advantages with either type of box you're looking at

Upfiring: most of the time you can incorporate more airspace in the box and depending on what subs (xmax in particular) you're going to run it'll sound so much better. As far as seat muffling goes, it's going to sound a hell of a lot better than a down firing box firing into insulation on the floor and then reflecting upwards through the box again.

Another key issue with box is the subs ability to actually move air easier. Now when you consider a downfiring box, unless it's ported, you will run into issues of the sub sounding "muffled" since there's limited airspace between the box deck and the floor. On an upfiring you do indeed have a seat there, but it isn't near as sealed as downfiring box would be. make sense? it's a lil hard to explain without a decent graphic i KNow. but trust me, an upfiring box will sound mucho bueno.

If you want to consider a front firing box, go for it. Only drawback about a front firing is if you have passengers of course the subs might get f*ed up.

ive always heard a downfiring ported box in them will sound the best . idk why but thats what ive always heard . but also there isnt enough room under there for 2 12's is this true ? i plan on runnin 2 10 inch alpine type r's with a downfiring probox i dont know if they come ported or not but i wil make it

 

type r's are too deep, but if you can get type x's they're not as deep
same with type e's. you can also resort to making a decent 1.5" raiser for the seat to fit a wee bit bigger box for 12's. it's easy, just cut some mdf and put it in between the seat bracket and the posts. the best box plan I have ever done so far is an upfiring sealed bass box for a '01 ecsb. made the risers and the box, box was flush with end of seat. sounded really badass. it had 2 05 kicker CVR12's in it (think they're 9.5" deep). box fit perfect though, and banged like a **** with a KX600.1

 

type x's arent cheap i heard . also how is it that people have said you can make the seats in a extended cab fold down flat like a crew cab . i know its off subject but u seem to have experience with these things . its a pain having a big yellow lab and the way the seat is angled you know nice if it folded flat .

 

I took a pic from GMFS and did the same thing to my seat, You cut right around the bottom hole on the latch and it allows your seat to fold down when the bottom is folded up. The seat is sill able to be locked in place as well. You have to remove the middle support cable for it to function. I used a sawzall and it took all of 5 mins,

I guess I try an up-firign 2-1"2 box over the spring.
