Base CD and Base Am/FM interchangeable?

Base CD and Base Am/FM interchangeable?
My Dad just picked up an '05 Silverado WT ext. cab with an AM/FM radio. He wants to get a CD player, and I was wondering if the base CD player(4-speaker) will just plug into the factory radio connector for the AM/FM only radio?
