Default What the hell is the point of shots/vaccines

Long story short. I spent the past 30 hours throwing my insides up, crawling around and an unbearable headache.

I finally break down and get my mom to drive me to the ER. Come to find out I have Meningitis. Now some might thing, he's a college kid and didn't get the shot for it. WRONG

I just had my 2nd of 2 meningitis shots less than 3 month ago. I'm living at home for the summer and I can't think of a damn thing that makes me six.

Just wanted to rant that Meningitis sucks *****.

i agree they are pointless but you actually may have contracted it from the shot since it is a weakened version of the actuall virus.

You didn't get it from the vaccine. If you read the fine print (which of course nobody does), it states that a meningitis vaccination will not protect you 100%. Just be lucky you caught it early and are alright. Also be lucky it isn't spinal meningitis because that can easily be deadly or lead to amputations...

Good thing you went to the hospital, meningitis can be very serious. Skip the vaccines, you'll live longer.

I had it when I was very little. From what I'm told, it was horrible. Apparently that and a few other life threatening occurences persuaded my mother to not have anymore children.

Quite the contrary. The vaccine is useful by introducing a small amount of the target into your system so your immune system can produce a response. If all of a sudden you are exposed to alot of something that your body has never seen before, bad things will happen. Of course you will always have that guy that says, "I've never gotten a vaccine and I've never been sick". This may be true but is quite rare and he is lucky he never came in contact with anything bad. Vaccinations was a tremendous step forward in medicine...

Well picture this. i went to bed last night at 8 p.m. I didn't sleep but maybe 30 minutes. I couldn't move or I'd throw up. I couldn't even have my alarm clock turned on because the light would make me sick.

Basically it was the most uncomfortable thing of my life. It was a constant pain and I couldn't do ANYTHING.

I had to get a spinal tap, CT scan, blood work, and something else I'm forgetting.

Let me just say that a 4" blunt tipped needle going in your spine is one of the worst feeling you'll ever feel.

Yeah, I agree, well, next to a bone marrow biopsy that is.

High fever, sometimes with chills
Severe headache
Nausea or vomiting
Light sensitivity (photophobia)
Sound sensitivity
Neurological signs such as drowsiness or confusion
Twitching
Sleepiness
Opisthotonus
Irritability
Sore throat
Delirium (particularly in children[1])
Seizures (occurs in about 20 to 40 percent of patients).
Nuchal rigidity (stiff neck, occurs in less than 50 percent of cases, but if seen, it is considered pathognomonic).
Swelling of "soft spot" (in infants)
None of that sounds like fun.
