Default Houston area: Anyone here do CD head unit installs

My stock headunit in the GMC has been acting up for a while now, but I've been putting it off. Well, now the CD player has completely stopped working and my damned Slim Thugger CD is still in there.

I am looking to get an aftermarket CD/MP3 Player, but its an expense I really hadn't accounted for and I don't want to spend a ton of $$$$. Looking to buy a decent head unit: alpine, kenwood, etc.....again doesn't have to be anything super nice, but I don't want a piece of crap either. Also, I know there is an adapter that you have to purchase to run aftermarket HU's in these trucks, anybody have part numbers and where to find. I basically need a rundown of parts and install kits, and an idea on a good headunit that won't break the bank and that will run good on stock speakers for a while until I get around to some aftermarket ones. I really don't want to have to go to someone like bestbuy or circuit city, but I have never done any stereo installs, so I am really green in that area. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, BTW. Not planning on running any amps or subs in the future either, figure with the ECSB I can't spare the weight, so I am looking at a hu with a 50x4 watt or so, just something suitable for some new speakers in a month or so.

Im in Baton Rouge, but should be there in May to whoop Farmer Beau's *** at the track. I used to do installs back in the day, and can help with the installation, but have been out of the scene for too long to really know whats good and whats not. I personally like Clarion, Pioneer, Kenwood, Eclipse, etc.

I did the install in my '01. I'm not sure exactly what is involved with the adapter. But I would check out crutchfield. Their prices are pretty good and they will know what you need. Also they will include the wire harness, dash adapter, and instructions. The headunit installs I have done havent been too bad. A thought anyway.

Also 50w x 4 is reasonable for max wattage, and expect around 17-22 watts RMS watts.

Here is one that fits, but expect to spend around 80 bucks on the adapter.

How bout this Clarion? The model is a few years old but I know where I can get a brand new one for under 180 bucks. This is the hu I wanted to stick in the crew cab a when it was first out, but never got around to it.

Curtis, I have a older model Alpine that's in great shape. I can install it too, I've always done my own. I haven't done my '02, because of the On-Star.

Nice, but it doesn't say what the RMS power is and you might need that to match up your new speakers. But most speakers respond well to the range this HU is in.

Yeah, I noticed that. I remember reading that the RMS Wattage on the Clarion was in the 18 RMS range I believe.

Shawn, what model alpine? I wouldn't mind letting you do the install as long as I could help out and watch. It's something that I've always wanted to learn more about, just never had the knowledge. I'd just need some additional info on wiring harnesses and install kits and adapters needed. I know there is the adapter for the door chime kit that I need to get with this truck for sure.

It's a CDE-7870, i believe. It has the Alpine harness, I'm not sure about the door chime and all.
