Im thinking of getting both and start doing this for people around my area or whoever wants to come. I would have to learn how to tune and once i felt comfortable with it i could start tuning for others. how do you think this would work for a small time shop

anything could be affordable depending on how many customers i could get i guess! I have been talking to my dad about getting out of the bodyshop business and start dynoing and tuning, he seems to be interested in it so i need to get HPT and show him what its about

Choose your software and see how well you learn it before you think of doing anything else. Dynomometers cost BIGFREAKING $$ and it would be a shame to invest in one before you get the hang of the software. A lot of people have tuning software, few can tune. Just my 2 cents.

A dyno is a big chunk a change to throw around just because you have an idea... I agree, the thought is fun but start figuring up actual cos and I believe the paperwork will talk you out of it.
The tuning would be a whole 'nother part of the equation.

A Dyno Dynamics is the best dyno I have been on, and is about 45k for the base 2wd model, just to give you an idea of the cost. That's a chunk of change to make pay for its self a couple hundred at a time. Also, don't think you can just pick up tuning in a couple months and be ready to make a living at it. Most guys who do it full time took a couple years or more of doing it a LOT before there were doesn't tuners. There is a lot to learn, plus new stuff, PCM's OS's and all kinds of things, all the time. Just a few things to think about.

yea i understand both of you. but this isnt going to be a very quick process, just like everyone else i will learn and do whatever can be done to help the process once i start on the path. This wouldnt be my fulltime career either just a part time or after hours kinda thing. but its something i want to do.
I was told by some guy that dynojet has inflated #'s what the heck was that meaning? i sure hope he doesnt think that a mustang dyno #'s are more correct than a dynojet

They are 2 different types of dyno's. A Dyno Jet is just an inertia dyno with a weighted drum and it measures how fast you can spin it up. A Mustang and also the Dyno Dynamics is a edie current motor dyno that can be loaded and uses a load cell to measure force. The numbers are usually different between the two with Dyno Jet being higher, but in my opinion, an edie current dyno is more accurate cuz it uses an actual load cell to measure load.
