Yeah I watched all of that.
Gm took everyone back, crushed all of them and sent them to the shredder.
i don't care how butt ugly of a car it was, if it saved me $4500.00 a year in gas
Then it is well worth owning it.

They weren't practical, nor were they a money maker for GM. Whoever made the film starts out with the usual enviro-weenie self righteous indignation that someone else should pay for their vision of the future.
If it is such a good idea, someone will make one again and make good money. Even todays hybrids (prius, et. al.) are more of fashion statement than something that is truly more economical. This is why they look so damned ugly, so that said enviro-weenies and celebrities can ostentatiously flaunt their environmentally superior moral status.
The pure electric cars, like the Impact only work in very limited numbers. If any significant portion of the driving public switched from hydrocarbons as their source of energy, we'd have to totally reconfigure our electric generation capacity, and the for price to build and operate a few nuke plants, you can buy a whole lotta gasoline.
If you want to save money, pick up a used Diesel Jetta or Corolla and you'll come out way ahead of someone that paid a premium to get a Prius.

I got to see all the EV1's getting scrapped at the proving grounds in Phoenix. It was actually pretty sad. It was a bold move for an automaker at the time and it was a step in the right direction IMO. The demise of the car is routed in controversy. A lot of people feel that GM's deals with the oil companies put an end to it. Some believe it was just a marketing stunt so GM would be seen as the "green" auto company. Either way, the amount of money is cost to convert your houses electrical system to charge the damned thing combined with the cost of electricy to charge it deemed it to be not "that" cost effective. Pappy, you wouldn't have of saved that much money a year, because your home electric bill would be WAY higher.
The reason why the Insight, EV1 and Prius are so ugly is mainly because of aerodynamics. They aim to decrease the drag of the car, yet leave room for all the batteries and such. The Insight's width in the rear is prime example of this. It'd be nice if they could shape them like a Vette, but there's no backseat, room for batteries, electric motor or trunk space.
Check out the EV1 at Wikipedia, it's really interesting. They had a diesel hybird version that got 100mpg.

The real garbage is that in the attempt to save the environment with the hybrid cars, what it takes to make them- the batteries is trashing the environment from the get go. And what happens when these batteries in these cars reach the end of their chrge/ drain life cycle, it's just a fashion statement. Don't get me wrong, I wanna save as much as the next guy, but even the E-85 hoopla isn't cost effective.........
