Two Dodge men killed in wreck

11/27/06
By STEPHANIE MILLER

HELENA - Two men were killed Sunday after being ejected from the vehicle in which they were riding, and a juvenile is still in a Macon hospital, while the 17-year-old driver is listed in stable condition. According to Trooper First Class Cyrus Brown of the Helena Post of the Georgia State Patrol, the accident happened at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday on Jim Ross Road, just off state Route 87 in Dodge County. Callie Burnham, 17, of Rhine was reportedly driving a 2006 Acura when she lost control while attempting to negotiate a curve. “...Overturned several times before stopping,” said Brown, “ejecting everybody out due to the high rate of speed.” Kyle Hilliard, 18, of Rhine and Joshua Koernig, 22, of Eastman, both “died at the scene,” and the 15-year-old male juvenile was transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Brown said the condition of the juvenile was not known at presstime. Brown was to check on the youth’s condition after deadline today. Other unofficial reports from Dodge County indicate the youth was “improving” at deadline today. It is also believed none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts. Brown said all of them were out of the vehicle when EMS arrived on scene and it would have been impossible for any of them to have gotten out after the car came to a stop because of the way the vehicle was damaged and the position it was in when it came to rest. He said the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is coming today to reconstruct the accident in addition to his investigation. Charges against Burnham are pending the outcome of the investigation.
