surfing the net earlier i came across an aussie forum that has what they refer to as a "shoutbox" on their page.

Looks like a great Idea to me.
Not as much hassle to maintain as an actual chat room. more like an open topic thread on the main page.

i can understand the mod effect on it, but, the one on that link is small, tidy, probably easy to manage...

its the pg-13 thing right? i understand.

you could use an irc channel (so no bandwidth used for the server) and a java applet for the members to use that would be iframed in. I've seen ones where you can set it to pg-13 or w.e.
