So i got into the parts pile today and found a 1/2 npt to 12an fitting. On this particular fitting:
1/2 NPT = .0533 ID
12 an = .0591 ID
i dont see .0058 making a measurable affect on the flow at all. literally a **** hair difference ID. I'll take the easy route and leave the exchanger stock. as Trick eluded to, there is no point in splitting hairs on this one.
the visual difference on 1/2" NPT vs 12AN would lead you to believe otherwise. the thread measurement on this fitting was 1.060 on the AN side with the 1/2 NPT measuring at .807. Dont judge a book by its cover i guess.

also, if i wanted to split those hairs, i guess i could open the tip of the NPT side of the fitting instead of messing with the threads in the cooler. The NPT thread has a tapered ID, and i measured the smallest point.
Your numbers are a decade off. The difference is .058"

prob not too big a deal. I'd still -12 bung it, but your project and money. I have different tools and skills, so it's easier for me to commit to the idea of welding bungs in
