Default Rebuild the 6l80 or 4l80 swap

Are thes shavings normal wear and tear?

Hello. I have a 2007.5 2500hd Ext. cab short bed. As of right now it's all stock except for cold air intake. I plan on doing a cam swap and some other goodies down the road. Maybe boosted..They're going to be put on the back burner due to my 6 speed going bad. My trans just quit shifting one day. It would go into Limp mode. You can start it back up and reset it. I dropped the pan and the filter was clogged and separating at the seam. I installed the new one and drove it for a couple days. Sometime it shifts fine sometimes it would slip or just not shift. i think it's shot. Anyone's opinions on either swapping to a 4l80 vs rebuilding the stock one.

I say rebuild unless you're gonna be putting a ton of power down

The 6L90e's in those heavy duty trucks are very strong, I'd do a rebuild and call it good. They can handle well over 500-600hp.

Getting a custom tune done will help tons with how they feel and shift.

The 4L80e is just a downgrade in the grand scheme of things over a healthy 6 speed. Unless you want some 1000 hp setup..... and even then...... run the 6 speed. If I could easily convert my 04 and 05 to 6L90E's my 4L80E's would go in the metal bin.....

Thanks for the replys. I guess I should listen to the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th opinions lol. When the trans first went out, I was bummed. Then, I got myself excited to make it better. My buddy does transmissions on the side and he said the same thing... besides, it's a 2500. It's my daily drive back to work/ hauler. Your right "ffdp". My goal is 5-6. I can get a skinnier drag queen one day for more power. But this truck is supposed to be my first vehicle that's worth building. I paid 4300 for a 2007.5 2500hd
. Who cares the trans fucked up. I'll Try to post pics of the rebuild. Hopefully it don't take all of my money so I can do other things too. Unless... somebody wants to buy it for 4K. I have 4 k I'm planning on spend it on the truck in the next month

Unless there was more than what i am seeing in the pan, check the valves in the valve body, and the screens on the tcm, may have a blown screen causing at least part of the issues. But agree with everyone else, 4l80 is a downgrade in that truck, unless youre planning on a ton of power, rebuild it and keep going!!!

Roughly $2600 depending on actual trans, thats just a quick google search of a part number off one of the gm parts sites

2500$ only 1000 more for a stock 6 speed compared to a monster. That's my main complaint is a stock that will possibly go out at 500 horsepower. I don't know if I'll ever go that high but still. For about the same price to put a built 4l80. I understand why. So until they get my core out there along with a few others for the next couple years, they will be expensive lol. Your all welcome I bought high mileage!
