there is probably some truth to this. The water pump is LS2 derived as it has the non replaceable rear cover and smaller bearing surface, the rods appear to be LS2, however I have not confirmed whether they are full floating or not, the pistons look like LQ4 pistons to me with the slight dish, not sure about the oil pump, Cam gears are LS2, that's pretty-much what I've observed so far

If you shine a light down in the bore from the bottom I would think you could see the ring lock down there.

Good catch on the crank pulley. This freshen up should weed out all those issues. It looks like your timing to do this now is about right.

there is some pretty decent carbon buildup as well, I guess Navy petrol isn't so good

I'm hoping the snout is ok
