Why are DRL's 3157?

I want to put LED's in my DRL's too but im afraid to spend almost $10 a bulb just for it to blow.. But i have had the regular halogen 3157 bulbs in there for some time now with no problems.. I did go through a streak where i had to replace them frequently though.
