Painted a a bunch of things in the garage. If you are on a budget, have no paint booth or a place that will get dusty, go with a nice single stage paint. You wont have to worry about a clear coat. Lay it down,wet sand and buff the *** out of it If you get a run, sand it out, buff it. It is more forgiving during and after it is done. Keystone makes very nice quality products, have had very good results using them along with Dupont and Sherwin Williams paints. PPG is $$$ and overrated IMPO. I am honestly considering doing my truck in a Single stage black.

Few things that I recently did. Alot and mostly all is in the prep and primer/sealer coat. That will reflect the over all finish. Again if your looking for a budget I would go with single stage. You do not have to take the paint down to the bare metal. TRUST ME. Sand all the clear off, fix any dents, wipe the truck down, tac rag it, hit it with the primer.. My buddy just had a shop do his cab and front end. He pulled all the windows/rubbers out, got the truck back, it looks like ****. At a cost of 2k. needles to say they are doing it again. LOL

Learning to paint a vehicle yourself is definitely a great skill to learn and can save quite a bit of money. Like said above the main thing is prep and cost can vary greatly. Both my old 84 and dads 68 chevelle were painted in our garage by us. Painting the hood, tailgate, and roll pan of my 01 right now and will be color matching things on my 04 soon too.

I painted my truck as well as many other things. The cost of materials has gone WAY up over the past 10 years. When I was in high school (class of 98) the paint was cheap enough to buy and practice with it. With todays costs at $1,000 for primer, sealer, base and clear... its a bit stressful doing the actual painting. It can be done in a garage with really good results, thats where I painted mine and it looks great. Probably the best advice is to go buy a book and read it.

I paint everyday at my job. I use ppg and its not all that expensive. I use global a gallon of paint is usually my cost threw my busisness is around 500, the gallon of primer NCP271 is about 250, the clear I use is D893 a high solids low voc clear shines for years without and wax. I had sprayed a bus here in Phx, AZ 8 years ago andis still the same shine no cracks or damage to paint and the bus gets washed every other day. So theres a reason that ppg, spies, du pont are on the higher end. They hold up to the elements and abuse. And yes if you have never sprayed anything before dont try a metalicto start with it will tiger stripe and your doing it all over again. I cant believe you guys left out the sealer coat which is also needed in a good paint job. But if you use a good primer it can be reduced usuallyto use as a sealer. Also get a sealer that will work properly with you paint for less coats of paint. Some colors cover better over white/ gray/ black/ or even tan so there is a ton of variables. Some of the best show paint jobs are garage shot.
