Shaving/Filling Engine cover
Guys, I wanted to shave down the "Vortech" on my engine cover and was wondering what the best way to do that would be and/or what I should fill the low spots with afterwards to smooth it out before painting? Is Bondo the way to go with this?

Let me explain what I was thinking of doing. I was wanting to shave down the vortech and then make that front section smooth. I liked the ribbs and wanted to paint just the ribs with a chrome paint and the rest red, so I still wanted the ribs in there.

well im not sure if you have any power tools but if you do get a dual action sander or a small angle grinder with 36 grit sanding paper on it and sand the vortec and those things on it down till its smooth. then get you some finishing putty and put on there and sand it down with 180 or 320. might as well do it with 180 and go ahead and sand down the rest of the cover while your at it. after you have that front part smooth and the rest of the cover pretty smooth get some primer and put 3 coats on there and let it dry. come back and sand it with 320 till completely smooth. if it is really smooth after that then you can paint it but if your using spray paint then you might want to put another coat or 2 of primer on there and come back and wet sand it with some 800 because if you dont then youll be able to see sand scratches in it. its not hard just time consuming. dont rush it and youll be good.

I have a random orbit makita sander (square) and a dewalt angle grinder. So just get a 36 grit sanding disc for the dewalt and sand that down like you said and then do the 180 by hand. Use the bullydog adhesion promoter as a primer?

that bulldog adhesion promotor is not primer. you should spray that on there before you prime it though. 2-3 light coats. id use that angle grinder with 36 grit. take your time or youll burn right thru it. when its all the way smooth there wont be much plastic left. will look something like this
i know your doing just the vortec but this is for comparsion
and when its all done yours should look like this. i didnt get pictures of it smoothed down
