The "hood liner" isnt there to prevent the hood from getting damaged from the engine heat. It is there as a fire blanket. In case of an engine fire, those plastic tabs holding it onto the hood melt, releasing the "liner" covering over the engine, hopefully smothering the fire.

Bet you guys didnt know that lol
