Railcar dust!

Has anyone had any problems with this? I've done everything from wax to the clay bar and it just keeps coming back!
All it is is a ton of pin head sized rust spots on the surface of the paint that you can practically scratch off with your fingernail. I called a shop in town for an opinion and he said most likely said he'll have to sand the top layer and put a new clear coat on. But he did say it will look better than from the factory.
What do you guys think?

When I painted for a GM delarship I delt with this problem alot. in fact I think almost all gm vehicles have this to some extent. It's the white ones that show it the most though. About the only solution to the problem is an acid bath. Even that usually is'nt enough the first time. I've done some 3 or 4 times. I would guess that most paint supply stores can get you the acid to do it yourself , but if your truck is relatively new, I'd try to get warranty to pay for it.

. Just passed the Council Bluffs test and I just took our State test this Tuesday, should hopefully know this Saturday
I'm going to look around some more I got one quote it was $600. That included sanding off the top layer and New Clear Coat, he said it should look better than factory

My old 98 mote carlo had this problem. I buffed it with some 3m finesse-it and it reduced the look some, but it never went away until I had it repainted. My car was navy blue and it looked like orange spots on the paint, pin head size, mostly on the trunk and hood. My fathers F150 had the same problem, but his buffed out completely.

When I worked at a dealership, every car/truck that came in had to go through the body shop to have the raildust removed. They had some kind of special solvent that did the job. I don't remember what it was. Check out a Chevy dealership bodyshop.

Another vote for acid bath....I'm not sure what the process is but it removed 98% of the rail dust from a previous truck. Not sure how much it costs, as I actually noticed it on the showroom floor and had the dealer write up a due bill for it as part of the sale.
