Default Paint over chrome?

It sounds stupid, but a friend who is a bodyman, told me you can paint over chrome just like you would with any metal. It doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't you have to acid dip the chrome part to remove the chrome? I've been wanting to go monochromatic with my truck and if I can sucessfully paint over chrome like my friend says, that'll save me some $$.

I've always heard that you need to remove the chrome first. I wouldnt think paint will stick/bond to the chrome

Thats what I've always heard too. I guess you can sand it off eventually or buy a raw steel bumper?

had a 93 one time and decided to paint the front bumper. took a scotch brite pad and scuffed it real good, then shot it with the some catalyst primer (may have been the etching kind, but i really don't know that much about that stuff, the uncle did it) and then laid on the color and cleared it. turned out pretty good and never had any problems with it coming up.

I guess I'll have to try it on something small first, like the mirror caps.

Thanks

There is some stuff on the market that will help pain stick to anything. I dont remember the name of it.

When I was a kid I took a green scrub pad and scatched up my chrome bike and painted candy over it. It looked hot. It lasted good too. I raced the bike and it went down alot and didnt get scratched up or anything.

paint will stick to crome!! DA THE PARTS YOU CAN WITH 180 GRIT, THEN HAND SAND THE REST WITH 180, THEN USE SELF ETCHING PRIMER(ONE GOOD COAT), MOST SELF ETCHING PRIMERS ARE NON SANDING. SO AFTER THE SELF E.. PRIMER FLASHES APPLY 2-3 COATS OF URITHENE PRIMER. WET SAND WITH 320 AFTER IT DRIES. THEN START NORMAL PAINT PROCESS.
