Default "Cutting"

I've been looking around about getting the swirl marks out of your paint and I noticed a lot of people are talking about a "cut". What exactly is this and where do I go about finding the supplies? How difficult is it and is there a possibility of messing up the paint?

"Cut" is the amount of cutting action the polish/compound has, usually rated on a scale of 1-10 if you're using meguiars products, or "heavy, medium, or light" on other products. The more aggressive the cut, the more care you need to take when using. Usually a cut of about 6 or 7 requires the use of a rotary polisher due to the lack of heat produced with an orbital buffer. When using an orbital, it needs to be for medium to fine swirls or light oxidation, while for heavier swirls, scratches, or holograms, you would need to use a rotary. Be careful when using a rotary as you can burn the clear, which isn't fun.
