Yep a tumbler would be ideal. Roger, Tim are correct. A hard clean with a acid, followed by some elbow grease. Wet sanding starting with the lightest grit possible that still will cut the pitts away, once they are smooth you will need to use a finer, then finer untill you make it up to about 1000 grit, then need to be buffed/polished. Unfortunately the power ball is not going to give you results on them, would more then likely destroy the ball.

you can get the acid from az or o'rielly's... I believe it is called Alumibright (or similar) in a gallon jug... not on the shelf though.

I wonder if something like a soda blaster would work.
It's very gentle on the metal but produces great outcomes.
For example, you can blast the paint off a soda can without harming the metal. We used to use one at work to blast/clean delicate metals and tanks.
Soda blast away all the bad metal, should leave you a nice clean smooth surface to begin the polishing/buffing step.
