Default Anybody smooth and polish there factory aluminum wheels?

I was wondering if anyone on here and smoothed and polished their factory aluminum wheels? I ran across an article. Where they polished up some factory wheels. I am wondering if the center caps are also aluminum or are the painted plastic.

center caps on factory silverado rims are plastic. Post the article if you have it. I have a set of factory rims and would be interested in it, as my factory rims have about and inch of dust on them.

the article is posted up top. That sucks about the center caps. I wonder if the GMC ones are plastic too? If they are there would be no point in polishing and smoothing the wheels.

Pull one of the center caps off, I think it's actually a thin stamped peice of aluminum attached to the plastic backing. Don't know if the aluminum facing is thick enough to take some rigorous polishing?
I contemplated doing this or having them powder-coated black with a Polished edge but it's pretty pricy to do and the rims are so narrow to begin with.

I just looked at one of the silverado wheels I have and your right. It is thin metal (aluminum maybe) attached to a plastic backing. So it is possible. With a lot of work.
