Got beat with my old motor.

First, some background on the trucks. Mine is a 1982 Silverado. I bought it with a 350 that really didn't run very good it would only rev to 3000 and backfired and bogged all the time. It had a th350 trans that shifted soft and slow. I got rid of the engine and trans and they ended up in my friend's 1981 silverado. I swapped in a cammed 6.0 and converted it to carburetor. I have headers and a 3" exhaust. The trucks are almost identical, both single cab shortbeds, both with slicks in back, same trans, both posi, both black. The differences are mine has 6.0,his has 350, mine has 3500stall, his has 2600, mine has 4.56gears, his has 3.42, mine has been lightened(and has traction bars), his is full weight.
Anyway, we lined up in front of his house. I stalled mine up to 3000, when the hand dropped, I got smoked off the line. I stayed about at his tailgate, maybe a little further back. I didn't seem to be gaining on him either. We raced about 3 times, and each one started and ended the same way. It was pretty embarrassing to get beat with the motor I got rid of. Not to mention all the effort I put into building my truck with the new setup. I gotta give props to my friend, he put together a fast truck with only old parts that he had sitting around the house. He beat me with an old tired 350 with a mid-sized cam and smog heads. That's just sad. My truck is a joke. I'll try to get the next race on video so ya'll can see how quick his truck is(compared to mine).

You definitely have an issue. Timing off? Carb secondaries not opening? The newer motors with the high efficiency combustion chambers don't like much more than 30* total timing. I've seen a stock LQ4 with a CAI not take any more than 24-26* on 93 oct. before it started showing knock on the log with plenty of fuel.

Maybe I do have too much gear, but I like the way the truck moves when it actually hooks. I lowered the timing from 36max to 29(all in by 3000rpm). I checked the secondaries, and they open. I'm really thinking it's my driving now. A guy that was watching it told me that I smoked the tires for about a block. I'm still a rookie and I get anxious on the take off. Then when I see the other truck leaving me, I stay on it(I can't really feel it spinning). What's your method TXSilverado? I heard you have a really good launch on the street.

good tires and dont get too anxious. figure out where you can stall your truck to and let off the brake without spinning the tires. dont give it any more gas when letting off the brake...just hold it where it was when you were brake stalling. after about 10' start to ramp into it. youll get to where you dont need to feather it because you know your truck and its traction. i can brake stall to about 1800rpm without breaking the tires. you have alot of gear behind the peddle so you prob wont get away with as much rpm on the launch
on the track i stall it about 1200 rpm and put the hammer to it on green

I don't know how, but just before me and my friend started racing, I took his cousin for a ride. I stalled it up to 3000, let loose and it hooked hard. I have 28X10.5 ET Drags on the back aswell as traction bars and a 16GAL fuel cell behind the axle(for weight). I took off from the middle of the street that time. When I raced, I was on the side near the gravel shoulder, but so was my friend....and he still beat me bad. I'm still learning about carb tuning and timing and stuff, so we'll see how it goes.
