Picked up a right angle die grinder for cleaning heads, block deck and other random things, got it at Harbor Freight for about $15 and it worked great for my uses.
Also got me some very fine blue scotch bright pads for the block deck recommend by TXSZ66avalanche (thanks man!) I got 30 very fine pads on eBay for about 15$ and I did buy ONE $8 yellow plastic bristle disc to try as I have seen where people use them for heads and stuff. Progress has been to slow.

As you can see about half of one side done and looking great.

I was thinking of cleaning off the top of the pistons. Any reason to do so? Or just leave them alone?

You can clean the pistons too if you want. Shouldn't hurt anything

I cleaned mine just because they were right there so might as well. Also, are you blocking the coolant passages? I'm not sure if it's required but i didn't want a bunch of sheeeet down in there.

@Cdub I did not block the coolant passages. There might have been some really small debris get in there but not much. I will flush the crap outta this thing when I get it going though.
