What in the old man repair is this?

Can't believe I never noticed that the first time. New battery cable coming this weekend.
You can barely see it but is that second wire coming off of it supposed to be on there? RockAuto doesn't show any grounds similar to that.

Haha. One of the battery posts on my Suburban is exactly like that! Bought it from older gentleman too. 😊

I just let it be. 🤷

My truck has that exact same smaller ground wire crimped below the large one like that. Should be factory.

I thought you were talking about the bolt with nut, which is really funny because my dad just did that exact trick while putting a battery in my other truck haha.

If that is the front left battery, That extra wire goes to the front of the core support mount on the frame under the front bumper. All The GMT800's are like that.
Why don't you see if that connection is bad at the battery first. You can buy the plastic cover and a new bolt if that's all you need.

The left front battery ground connects here with another ground from the headlight harness. But that is just a temporary bolt from when I was trying to fix the issues with my doner.

Unless the bare wires are corroded you probably don't need to replace it. For the ground side, it's almost better to remove the boot because corrosion builds up inside those boots and it's a lot easier to clean it with no boot, also easier to inspect the wire for corrosion. I put some liquid tape over the exposed wires on mine.
