Dont wanna sound like an ***, but hows the battery? Can you hear the starter solenoid click or anything? Does the pump prime? I had a similar issue last summer where everything seemed fine when in the run position but when i turned it to the start, bam nothing and the dash lights everything would turn off. It turned up i had a bad cell in the battery.

Btw sweet build!

Have you checked the starter relay? I think that you are on the right path with the starter being the issue though. You could pull the starter and hook it up to the battery and see what happens, that would be a fast way to find out if the starter is toast or not.

Something with the park/Nuetral safety switch?

Do all the dash lights turn off when you turn the key forward?

Try putting it in Nuetral once and starting it

On the starter check for 12 volts at the large cable. Then check for 12 volts at the smaller wire with the key in the start position.

If you have power at the smaller wire then the starter is bad. If no power then you'll have to check the starting circuit. You would need a wiring diagram. Might also try swapping the starter relay with another.
