The Comeback: Phantom's ShopTruck project 2001 Sierra

Well, my last project, ChiChi, met its firey demise 12-18-17. Don't ask what happened as I don't 100% know. You're welcome to make your own assessment lol

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...c90309bf1.jpeg

These trucks are getting harder and harder to find in good shape, even if you're willing to pay a little extra. For a month, I searched all over the country looking for a replacement. Then, one day I just happen to fall into the truck I wanted since the day we finished building it.

I introduce you all to, ShopTruck.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...797deb7f7.jpeg

It's a 2001 GMC Sierra. My buddy and I built this truck back in 2013. Started out life (as we knew it) as a real pile with a need for lots of body work, a 4.8 and no transmission. We went to a local salvage yard and picked up a 4l80 with converter out of an old at&t van so he could drive it. The stock 4.8 on the bottle obviously wasn't cutting it so he decided to build a healthy 408. We pulled the 4.8 while waiting for the 408 build and had his dad do all the body work to make this thing look new again.

Fast forward to January 9, 2018. It is now mine! When we picked it back up, it wouldn't start, the Bogarts that my buddy had put on it were sold for $300 and it was sitting on chrome stock bullet holes, and the truck was just an all around mess. So we took it back to the shop, pulled the intake, cleaned the intake runners, intake, injectors, put new plugs in and fired right up! Also put the late model silverado wheels and tires I had from my other truck on it while we were there

It set a little higher in the back end than I like. Luckily, the rear end from my truck wasn't damaged in the fire. So we took it out and put it in this truck.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...37b31221b.jpeg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...599f34471.jpeg

Now that it was running and looking better, I was able to start working on the tune since it was never really finished before. Did a bunch of drivability tuning and got it driving very nicely. Then decided to go WOT...120% IDC. Since I couldn't really remember what we did for the fuel system 5 years ago, I decided to just replace it all. I had #95 injectors, 450 pump, and 10 micron filter from Deatschwerks left over from what I planned to do with my last build, so I through it all in this truck. New fuel system front to back with -8 feed and return. It was a trick to get two -8 bulkheads in the stock bucket. Wish I would have taken some pics of that as it actually turned out nice.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...82adc0795.jpeg

3 of the 4 Bogarts survived the fire. I sent those 3 back to Bogart to be checked out and repolished and have a new front built. Got them back and wrapped in 28x6-17 Sportsman SR and 275pro drag radials

Haven't really had alot of time to mess it recently as its either been too cold or we've been too busy. I did manage to sneak it in on one of our track rentals and make one pass. I was so excited to just finally get this truck down the track, I didn't even check tire pressure. It was somewhere around 30psi lol. Anyways, managed a 1.72 7.65 at 91mph. Would prolly translate into a high 11.9x at around 115mph. Pretty much exactly what I expected with what I'm working with currently.

Current setup:
11.5:1ish 408
SDPC L92 heads
ebay 3.5 CAI
Vic Jr.
elbow with 92mm ebay tb
91 octane
1.75" pacesetter headers
crush bend 3" dual exhaust
bone stock 4L80 with single disk converter that flashes to 4200ish rpm
8.6 10bolt with Yukon helical posi, Yukon 4.11 gears, and Yukon axles
Flipped with 2" shackles out back
Cal-Tracs
Lowered with springs and spindles up front
Custom Kicker stereo system with 2 10" subs, amp, equalizer, and in-dash dvd/nav
Truck weighs 4520 with me and 1/4 tank of gas

I actually loaded the truck on the trailer to take to the track a couple weeks ago. Only reason for trailering it was I planned to spray it and I don't trust the 10bolt even though it has nice parts in it lol. Electrical gremlins kept me doing anything cool though

I have a bunch of parts already accumulated for this truck just haven't had time to really mess with it.

Plans:
1 7/8" headers
3" mandrel bent exhaust with x-pipe
Rossler 4L80 with transbrake
Protorque triple disk converter
Custom 4" (real) cold air intake
Quick Performance 9" rear end with 40 spline axles, aluminum center section, 4.30 gears, and Wilwood brakes
Nitrous Express single entry crossbar with Max 5 Controller

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...dbc064741.jpeg

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...f9525952e.jpeg

I also installed a Safecraft PB3 fire extinguisher on the trans tunnel. I atleast want to have a fighting chance if I'm ever to experience another fire

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...bca47144e.jpeg

My immediate goals with the truck are to get all the new parts installed. I'd like to run 11.50s on motor and give it just a little sniff of nitrous to get into the 10's

Not sure about YouTube but yes this is his old truck

TXsilverado 04-02-2018 12:49 PM

looks better than chi chi. check out the link below. I think it's worth checking into. A buddy just picked one up for his coupe, and it looks extremely nice. I nearly shit when he said gets them on ebay for 160. I've seen claims of 40+ hp gains on N/A applications by dumping the elbows. I really think more N/A and Nitrous guys here in the truck world should look deeper into the vic-jr and 4150 throttle bodies instead of blowing their wads on junky ass lazy throttle response fast intakes.

So sweet, i really enjoyed the last build you had.

Phantom 04-05-2018 08:21 PM

Stuck it on the dyno today to make a quick pull just to see where it’s at currently. Made pretty much exactly what I figured based on the mph/weight at the track. I honestly figured it’d make the power higher though based on what the camshaft is suppose to be. Suppose to make power up to around 8k. It’s is promising though that I could see big gains with the new exhaust/induction setup

Don’t see 500 being out of the question at all with a true 4”+ intake and 1 7/8 and a true 3” dual setup or maybe even a single 4” exhaust

TXsilverado 04-05-2018 11:18 PM

Screw an intake. 4150 or nothing (unless its turbo). A4" intake will probably flow more than that elbow which makes the biggest best intake pointless. Im sure it could use larger/better exhaust.

What is the cam supposed to be? I doubt there are many off the shelf cams for a single plane with ported square ports. Ive never looked though. Im sure howards has one.

It’s nothing off the shelf. It was spec’d by Reher and Morrison when we built the motor. I don’t know the specs, just remember telling them we wanted to spin this thing up there. I’d honestly like to tear the motor and change a few things about it so I know exactly what I have (lifters, springs, new rings, oil pump)

Not ruling out the 4150. But I’m definitely going to try the elbow with a 4-5” intake getting actual cold air. If the 4150 is worth 20-40 hp that people claim, it can stay. If it’s 5-10, I’ll stick with the intake/tb/elbow with some filtration. It’ll be fun to experiment for sure

arthursc2 04-06-2018 12:29 AM

That thing made 6hp less than my blown 5.3!

That makes me hella excited for my blown 408 with 10.2 and square heads! Haha.

Excellent power man. Must be a riot to drive

skyhighsami 04-06-2018 01:03 AM

When people run these 4150 is it primarily for motors that spin to the moon? If got an 11.8 416 running a stock L92 intake a 90mm Trailblazer SS intake. Is there is an intake where large gains are to be had I'm extremely interested.

TXsilverado 04-06-2018 08:59 AM

The single plane intake is what helps spin to spin high. The 4150 just distributes air to a single plane better. I wouldnt say that 4150 flows more air per-say. My experience says 4150 style has a MUCH snappier throttle. I was using a 4150 carb on a ls2 though so im not 100% that would apply to efi, but i dont see why not.

Single plane is also better for nitrous distribution on non direct port big shots.

Turbos dont seem to give a shit what intake you run. Or atleast less so than n/a and nitrous combos.

dirt track racer 81 04-16-2018 03:55 PM

4150 throttle bodies are better for nitrous as well

blackened'14 05-06-2018 08:20 AM

Made some time to get the Quick Performace 9” in a couple weeks ago. Dirt track racer 81 once again to the rescue. 10+ years of bailing me out of tight spots lol

Setup is a Quick Performace 9” narrowed .5” per side from a factor 10bolt
Strange aluminum center section with spool and 4.30 gears
40 spline axles
Wilwood drag brakes drilled for factory 6 lug pattern (still had to grind these a little for my bogarts to fit)

FF to this week. I managed to talk my way into being invited to the Street Outlaws daily driver race. I called our friends at Nitrous Express to order one of their SAFE stand alone fuel cells so I could put some c16 in it and put some bigger nitrous jet in it...welllll, then all the sudden stand alone fuel cells weren’t allowed. Which meant I had to do what I’ve be procrastinating...switch over to e85. It’s one of those things I kinda wanted to do any ways, but didn’t really want to do because I do drive my truck all over and e85 is really available everywhere I like to drive. But, it was pretty painless since I already have the big DW fuel pump and injectors, other than draining out the 26 gallons of gas in my tank. I haven’t re-dyno’d. Tuned it all with street driving. I feel that the truck runs all around better/smoother so I like that.

I’ll go ahead and spoil it for you and let you know I didn’t win the daily race lol. But the truck did surprise some folks

No. Only when the converter is unlocked for awhile. But this transmission has been going in this truck for 5 years. No telling what it was treated like in the 70k miles it spent before that in the at&t van it came out of.

And no

TXsilverado 05-07-2018 04:15 PM

Spoiler alert! LOL. figured out the street traction in that thing yet? ever considered trying spring sliders? I've been trying to get someone in the full size community to try them out. they are commonly used in the s10 world and worked awesome on my s10. I think they could help the rcsb trucks, but nobody is willing to try new things anymore. you and Tyler seem to be the only ones willing to work outside of the cookie cutter bolt on builds now days.

No I don’t run one

Finally made time to get the Rossler 4L80 in. To do that, we also had to redo the exhaust (which I wanted to do anyways)

Luckily, we were able to use most of the Stainless Works material from my old truck on this one. So instead of having 1 3/4” headers and crush bend mild steel 3” exhaust, I now have 1 7/8” headers and a mandrel bend 3” exhaust with a Stainless Works x-pipe and dual 20” 6” round magnaflow mufflers (same mufflers as before) It’s amazing how different the sound is now after basically just adding an x-pipe. So mellow. I love it. Seems to have picked up a considerable amount of power as I had to add quite a bit fuel from pretty off idle to 7400rpm (upwards of 17% more fuel in some places). Hope to get it back on the dyno to the track maybe this week to see what we picked up

Transbrake button on the steering wheel
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...d357cc740.jpeg

Also switched the truck over to a 29.5x10.5 slick. No doubt in my mind it’s faster on a radial, but I’ll trade off a little et for consistency on the street Can’t wait to let go of the transbrake button and leave at 3500rpm on the ish

Phantom 01-01-2019 11:10 PM

Well, the 408 is no more. I pulled the Rossler out to be sent back in for a couple upgrades and while it was gone, decided to put my stock 4L80 back in so I could still race. Unfortunately I forgot to change my shift points (Rossler shifts within 20rpm of commanded, stock trans has to be commanded at 6600 to make the shift by 7400ish) and made a couple runs to 8000rpm+. I was able to get my 10 second pass on a 100shot but then the next pass it let go about the 660' mark. Completely disintegrated #4 piston, broke #4 rod, damaged #5 rod, broke the crank, destroyed the cam, damaged the heads, and broke the block as well as put a hole in it. After looking everything over real good, I'm guessing it pulled the pin out of the bottom of the piston as #5 piston was cracked in that area upon inspection. The motor had been together for 5 years and didn't owe anyone anything. It wasn't built to run as much nitrous as I had been prior to this outing. It was built to run well N/A and then spray it with a 100shot, not 3-400 lol
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...b23af05bbc.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...918390eb69.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...d72854fef7.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...eceacf1029.jpg

I was actually hoping the crank was still good so I could build a 383 or even another 408 if I could find a 6.0 block but after taking it to have inspected, sure enough, it was broke. So, I took some time to figure out exactly what I wanted to do. Whatever I would decided on, would have to be matched well with the F1a procharger I planned to use on my next build. I thought about putting the 408 for my s10 in it, but decided against that. I'd almost decided on building a 331 (3.80 bore 5.3) and then I found a smoking deal on an LS2 longblock out of a TBSS that had a spun rod bearing. So I went and picked it up, brought it back to the shop, disassembled it, and then took it to the machine shop.

While the motor was gone, I gave Procharger a call and they got me hooked up with their stage 2 kit with an F1a-94 head unit. Ever since I first got into hotrodding back around 2006, I'd always wanted to have the Procharger sound. And now I would have it.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...17bde6d93e.jpg

The motor ended up with a 4.030 bore. I used a crankshaft out of a 5.3 we had laying around out back. I was able to reuse 6 of my old rods. The old heads were repaired. I gave Texas Speed a call to order some CP pistons, a couple new compstar rods, and gave them some specs for a cam for them to grind. So, the new setup is:
11.5:1 370c.i.
SDPC cnc L92 heads with PAC 1208x springs
Johnson lifters
3/8 pushrods
Rollmaster single roller adjustable timing set
235/248 .649/.615 114LSA
Vic Jr intake with elbow
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...b17bc4f184.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...f5ec721ad9.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...4df7c4a46b.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...29f7f111ef.jpg

I got the motor put together and then was able to get it put in the truck when I got back from SEMA. Didn't touch the tune from when it was a 408 but it fired right up and actually drove well. Put a few miles on it and then a couple weeks later we loaded up to head to the track in Tulsa. I pulled a few degrees of timing and pulled the shift points back to around 6400rpm and managed to run a 12.5x at 109mph. I was actually really happy with that considering the 60' was .2 slower than normal and I hadn't really even tuned for this motor yet.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...b82ad64d23.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...19df05982c.jpg

I had bought control arms, atomic mounts, and coil overs for the truck awhile back, but I had a number I wanted to run before we swapped over. Unfortunately the motor blew up directly after I hit that number lol. So now that that new motor was in and we had a little down time, I swapped over to the coilover setup. Saved 13.5# per corner

Sweet!!! Nice to see an update. I has a couple questions if you don't mind.

Did you weld the stock 24X crank trigger wheel to keep it from separating into 2 pieces?

Was it tack welded to the crank?

Who waterjet cut those tabs you?

Phantom 01-01-2019 11:37 PM

Reluctor wheel is welded
not sure what the weld is. I’m sure part of the balancing process

the tabs aren’t water jet. Our shop fab guy cut them out by hand and used JET sanding machine to shape them

Yes the welding in the picture is for the mallory in the crank for balancing.

I wasking if the wheel was weld together since they are 2 pieces and also if it was tack welded to the end of the crank.

BTW, What kind of valve covers are those? They look really sanitary. I like them.

Oh. I'm not sure. I told the machine shop do whatever is needed so I don't have trouble with the wheel. We've had trouble with the wheel being installed wrong in the past on the truck with the last crank

They're billet ones from Moroso. They have these and then the taller ones like I have on the motor for my s10

Ah, ok. We had one actually separate on the last motor. Some people weld them together where they are pressed together.

I am over it. I just use billet 1pc wheel now. I think they are about $150 but so much less hassle. Also I tack them to the crank to keep them from spinning. Especially when spinning above 6K.

Now it was time for what I've been waiting for. Time for the Procharger install! I've watched the guys install a couple of these, but they make all this stuff look easy. I was really impressed at how easy the stage 2 kit is to install. It's a very well laid out kit with great instructions and parts that fit together really well. I had the bracket and head unit installed in minutes. I got the kits that's made for the 07+ trucks which puts the intercooler behind the grille. We did some cutting and welding to put it exactly where we wanted, how we wanted. But I feel like it could still be installed in that location on this truck with the parts they sent and a little thought.

While doing this, we decided to move the battery to the rear of the truck mounted to the frame rail. I used 1/0 cable from KICKER to run the power and grounds. With the battery out of the way, I cut the pcm tray up and mounted the pcm in the factory batter location. None of that was necessary, but I wanted to relocate the battery for better weight distribution and it really cleaned up that front corner of the truck

I had a DW400 pump in the stock basket previously but knew it wasn't going to be enough for the new combo. Aeromotive will be building a triple pump setup, but I haven't got around to sending them a new tank to start the build yet. So for the time being, I bought a new sending unit, we installed a -12 bulkhead with a 3/4" aluminum tube welded to it that extends to right at 1/4" above the bottom of the tank. I used a -8 bulkhead for the return that also has a 3/4" aluminum tube welded to it for the return. For now I'm using a Magnafuel 4303 mounted the crossmember in front of the tank. This setup doesn't have any issues with priming and I've currently run it to around 1/8 tank and everything still seems fine. I wouldn't take a chance on racing it with the fuel level this low, but it's nice to know I can drive it around on most of the tank. I also installed an ethanol content sensor. I put it on the feed side but not really in the feed path (seems better in my brain to do it this way instead of necking down the feed or return to 3/8 from -8 or -10). So the fuel system is:
-12 from the tank to the pump
-8 from pump to 10 micron filter
1/8 to -6 out of pump fitting to ethanol content sensor -6 from sensor to 1/8 to -6 fitting in filter fitting
-8 from filter to Y that goes into -6 to the front of the rails
-6 from rear of rails to regulator
-8 from regulator back to the tank
Using DW2200cc injectors

That's pretty much where I'm at for now. All the big stuff is done. I swapped the P01 pcm out for a P59 so that I can have a 3bar OS AND Flex Fuel and just been trying to figure out the tune. It runs pretty good. E85 is actually only around E60 here currently so I'm trying to be a little conservative with fuel and timing. So far I've taken it to 7100rpm where it made around 13#. I'll prolly pulley down so that I can make around 15# at 6500ish and then should be really fun once I start shifting it up there around 7500 or so. I'll of course also have a nitrous kit ready to go just in case.

Put a few miles on it now. I think I’m ready to go ahead and pulley down. Not sure if I’ll do the 4.5 or 4.25. Should prolly just go ahead and do the 4.25...or even 4” lol

all the rubber hoses hoses on the passenger side drive me insane. But I don’t know what to do. They all have to be there lol

Drove it to work the other day. Checked the weather before I left the house and it looked clear. Then about 3pm and freak winter storm come thru and stranded me. If I could’ve got to my 20’s I would’ve just put them on and drove home. But I wasn’t trying to get the Bogarts that dirty, not mention driving on ice with slicks lol. I did end up putting the 20’s on just because once the weather cleared up. I can leave black marks and clouds of smoke from pretty much any mph lol

No video, but, caught a race with an R6 this morning on the way to work. Bike had cam, head work, tuned, and gearing. Said he short shifted trying to be cocky. But I ran out his life. Truck felt good. That’s the first time I’ve really stuck it and stayed in it for any length of time since we finished building it.

They're billet ones from Moroso. They have these and then the taller ones like I have on the motor for my s10

What’s that “tank with an fittings” next to the carb?

that block/color scheme looks great too. Well done
