97 Suburaban 5.3L LM7 swap
#21
Well I got the last of the parts ordered and I bought some of them locally. I still have to finish up the wiring. I will get the engine harness closer to being completed tomorrow. I wanted to put the engine and trans in tomorrow to see how the wiring lines up.

Well I got the DBC Tb in with sensors and pigtails. Also got a 5 pin truck maf. I should receive the last bit of parts tomorrow and then it is off to try to finish this truck up this weekend but r early next week. I will then get the pictures organized, so can post them up here.

Ok everyone it is running!
I have a large list of small things that need to be done before I can make this baby my daily driver.
I have some questions that I hope someone can shed some light on.
The 04 harness has a 4wd low signal wire that is run by ground. I can't find out what wire on the 97 harness that does this. ATM I can't put it into 4wd low because of this.
My RPM and Speed gauge do not work ATM. I am trying to find the signal wires for those.
I need to insulate my wiring from the exhaust. What can I use for this?
I am trying to find a vacuum diagram for an 04 L59, so that my engine stops sucking up oil into the intake.
Other than that I drove it around the block and it shifted fine. I really liked driving it because of the feeling of accomplishment. I will try to upload the video, but I have been having issues uploading things.

I did some research on the vacuum issue, but really I am not getting anywhere.
As the engine is running my bro pulled on the dipstick and it had positive pressure. He could put his finger over it and it would idle down like it was a vacuum leak. I am very confused by this.
How would I have that much pressure in the crank case?
This engine doesn't seem to have a pcv valve, so I don't understand why it is doing this.

the tach issue im not sure where the wire is. but i know when you find it you will have to get a part from dakota digital to make it operate correctly. the LS tach reads half as much as a 5.7. so say you actually at 3000rpm the stock gauge would only read 1500.
for insulating your exhaust i would buy like titanium heat wrap. its a lil pricey but great stuff. i think you can get enough to do the engine compartment and a little further back for around $100
1996 Vortec 5.7 Harness Schematics
here is a pinout that should be close to your engine. so you can hopefully find the speedo and 4wd low wires.
as for the vaccuum issue i dont know

I was trying to insulate the wiring that runs above the exhaust and behind the engine. I think it would be just as effective to wrap the manifolds though, so I will try that.
I actually use that pinout. The 4wd wire isn't called the same. I searched it over and over to try to find it. I think I will have to try to find a diagram of the transfer case. The speedo I think is ran by the 97 ecu, so I may have to splice those wires in.
The vacuum I think I might have figured out. These engines seem to not have a conventional PCV system, so I will have to go more the custom route. I am just pulling oil from my crankcase the way it is set up now.

Well congratulations on getting it moving under its own power ! That a an awesome feeling I know !
Can you explain how your vacuum lines are connected to the engine/manifold/valve covers ?
Would love to see some pics .

I have a fitting on the rear of the intake to the brake booster, drivers rear of the valve cover goes to the top, and passenger front of the valve cover to a fitting behind the throttle body. I think that I have the valve covers that have pcv built into the covers. There isn't a conventional pcv valve.
I am going to put a breather on the passenger side and add a check valve to the drivers side. I think that this will help with the excessive pressure.

Well now I have an intermittent starting issue. Sometimes it will start up fine. Other times it just won't turn over like it wasn't in park. I don't understand it at all. I switched the starter relay for the ac one. It has a brand new range sensor on the transmission. The gear shifter is slightly of, but still goes into all the gears.
any suggestions?

Well I have tons of pictures of this swap, but atm I am busy as F! Moving across the country, so when I get to Colorado I will post up everything. I will be ripping it back apart and redoing a bunch of things. OCD lol
Doing a bit of restoration.
