1984 K5 Blazer
#324
I bought a 97 vortec a year and a half ago with intentions of building it to install in to something one day. Factory roller with a one piece rear main. Then I bought the blazer and all my engine money went towards that. Blazer is in a good spot mechanically now so it's time to build the spare block and drop it in. The current motor is bored 60 over with flat tappets and a two piece rear. Stock build with an RV cam. It runs fine but the oil pressure is about 2-3psi at idle but climbs to about 30psi running down the road. I don't know the history of this engine but given the bullshit I've had to fix from the previous owner I'm going to scrap it and start with a fresh engine. Current plan on the new motor is flat top pistons, brodix ik aluminum heads with 180cc runners and 70cc chambers and a howards cam with 560ish lift and a 112lsa. Should be about 10.1:1 compression and make solid power from about 2000-6500. Throw an 11" converter with a 2500 stall in the transmission and this should be a fun truck to bomb around in but still be able to crawl. I'm also starting to piece together a Holley Terminator X fuel system hence the new intake manifold.

Yikes 2-3 psi OP is scary, sounds like it will be a ripper with the new motor! I'm all about having spares or at least a solid plan on backup engines and trans, sick of waiting for stuff to get finished at shops when I need it or trying to find stuff in stock during the covid BS.

Pressure builds up with rpm’s so I’m not terribly worried but I always have that thought in my mind of when it pops. It might be loose bearings, might be a worn pump, who knows. Not worth risking with a big build. I’ll tear it down when I put the new one in and see if anything stands out and maybe throw some
bearings at a pump at it and leave it for a spare or sell it.
