I miss being that young and having no bills... Lol!!! You have quite a headstart on the truck!! Been working on mine for 3 or 4 years (not counting the lift i put on in 2001 or 2002) and still not done....
Look into a specd cam rather than an off the shelf grind, be more tailored to your goals and what you want rather than what will get you by...
Where did you find the tailgate assist? That sounds like a good idea....

well, my goal is to keep in emissions legal, streetable, but still provide a good amount of hp and the least important, that killer lope im still new to the whole concept of a custom cam so i need to do a lot more research on what would be best for me. If i stay natually aspirated id love 400hp to be the goal.
its called DeeZee tailgate assist, its 30 bucks shipped. all it is is basically a piston assist so that all you have to do is release the handle and it will lower itslef at a constant rate instead of slamming down. heres the link to what looks like the one i used: Dee Zee Tailgate Assist for 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 DZ43100 | eBay

Update: I have in my garage a Stage 3 texas speed 216/220 cam with ls6 springs waiting to be installed. However, in the process of building my trans to handle it, i fused the forward clutches together and had to have it rebuilt, so the cam wont be going in just yet because of $$$ shortage. However, I got my 4l60e mildly built while in it. it currently sits with the z06/billet servos and a trans cooler like before, but added to it is a new converter, a sonnax performance pak, and an Alto powerpack steel 3/4 clutch. shifts are very hard and fast which i like, and it chirps the tires often.
also, the lower valence has been painted to match the body color with the exception of the silver part. since my bright red tow hooks now clash with the valence, i was thinking about once the cash comes back mounting some led pods in the tow hook spot for fog lights.
