Default sooo....i ran out of gas (face palm)

So long story short, the fuel guage in my 97 F250 Turbo diesel doesnt work so good lol
My gf took it to work on friday and didnt put any gas in it. Well we were leaving for New Braunfuls for some tubing after work and i was on my way to pick up her brother then hit a gas station. Well apparently there are not many diesel stations close to them. So i ran out of gas. STUPID i know!

So her parents had to get a gas can and get some diesel. I put about five gallons in and to my surprise the damn things fired up like a rocket. Little rough at first obviously but drove fine. No issues. I drove to the nearest diesel stop and filled up.

Drove about 100 MILES and stopped at a Whataburger to get a bite to eat. Well when i started the truck up, it idled BAD! When i would step on the gas pedal it wouldnt jump at all. Maybe slowly creeped up to about 10 miles an hour, with white smoke... DEFINATELY something wrong.

Just curious as to what could be the issue? Still air in the lines after 100 miles or so???

This sucks and promise to the diesel gods not to run out of fuel ever again!

I'm with spoolin. How did that happen and how did you figure that out. Sounds like lack of fuel.

I have a friend who just went through the same exact thing. He let someone borrow his truck and ran out of fuel with it. I don't remember exactly why, but it is horrible on those diesel F250s to let them run the tank dry. If I remember I will ask him why and get a better answer.

Its happened to me twice on my 99 powerstroke. It can really hurt the injectors and is rough on the pump. The fact the truck fired right up does not add up with the head gasket blowing out a hundred miles later. I would check fuel water separator and fuel pressure. 7.3s are strong motors and not known for head gasket failure, plus if it were seeping water into cylinders with the high compression it would prolly not fire on that cylinder if it were bad.

Remember. Running rich = black smoke, running lean = white smoke. I've seen mine do both a few times, but mostly black smoke LOL.
